New base Cayman announced

Coming on the heels of a report in Excellence that Porsche has a 45 day backlog of Cayman S on hand and are begining to question the original pricing strategy (since when does the hardtop cost more than the cabriolet?) comes this surprisingly early launch of the base car.

... seems like a 968 redux - except it only has a 5 speed!

Playing on the Rennlist Cayman board I posted this for the un-initiated:

5.9 sec 0-60 v. 5.8 sec (a wash in the real world)

3,086 lbs curb weight v. 2,880 (OK, so the new car clearly wins one category)

um - what specs are you using? - we have 225 ft/lbs



but i agree - i think the 968 might be a better choice for the money, especially if you dumped a few grand into the suyspension, so that it could handle as well as the cayman

Hmm... my 968-powered 944 has similar weight (and a 5-speed). But heck of a lot more cargo space! <img src="/forum/images/smilies/968/biggrin.gif" class="smilie" alt="" />

so does this trend mean that next year they'll introduce the new $ 37,500 Cayman

he, it was satisfying enough to know that with less than $ 1k worth of mods a 968

coupe would not be too embarrased by a cayman S, but to realize the same mod'ed coupe might even pull a little ahead of the new cayman (S-less) is...pretty damn cool !

Cayman is on a solid platform, with mid-engined dynamics of course.

Gotta love light weight, no matter what. Combine that with being new and a good aftermarket and its a pretty attractive proposition.



That being said, we all prefer 968s here of course. I've driven Boxsters and Boxster S's, neither of which really grabbed me and made me a believer. Great cars, but they didn't inspire me.



One thing is for sure, you could take a pristine $20000 968 and make it an absolute ROCKET with $30000 in mods. That much is for darn sure.

This is where they should have priced the Cayman to begin with.



Anyone looking at a new Porsche has probably never heard

of a 968 <img src="/forum/images/smilies/968/wink.gif" class="smilie" alt="" />



If you adjust for inflation a new 968 coupe would cost well over $49,000.



Locally here in socal there's a Porsche dealer that's having a hard time

selling a Carrera GT priced in the $400k range.

I couldn't haul myguitars or soccer coaching gear around in a Cayman! That's what originally led me to the 968. Add in the looks, the exclusivity and the woopee factor and I don't see how I could switch!

I think you guys might be forgetting the cyaman is under warranty, and uhhh, looks new...and uh....doesn't have LSD <img src="/forum/images/smilies/968/wink.gif" class="smilie" alt="" />

In typical Porsche fashion I suspect you will never see a Cayman price that starts with a 4. At least not for 3 years or so. I think the Cayman is a beautiful automobile, and as long as Porsche continues to present us with different (and more affordable) choices I say bring it!

I'm not too impressed with the new version, not compared to the "S" anyways. Yeah it might be more affordable (than other new models), but meh, it doesn't seem MUCH better than what I have now with the 968. If I was to get a new porsche, I'd rather get the "S" version, or a 911 as expensive as they may be.
