new article - have some questions
#1

so, i'm writing a new article about the 968 and thought i would pose a couple of questions:

1. what is your favorite thing about the 968? (could be performance related, design related, service related, whatever)

2. what is your least favorite thing about the 968? (same as above)

3. what drew you to the 968?

4. if you sold it, why?

Favorite Thing: The community of 968 owners that I discovered last year is really fantastic. There are lots of other great things about the car, but this group of people has been an amazing plus in the ownership experience.

Least Favorite: Cost and availability of parts

What drew me to the 968: I drove a 944 for years. I felt more connected to that car than any other car I have ever driven (until the 968). The handling was fantastic, the interior was laid out logically with everything in easy reach. The 968, the next step in the evolution of that line, was the obvious choice for my next car.

I will never sell the car. I like it too much. A year ago, I nearly sold it because the Porsche dealer service was becoming prohibitively expensive and their lack of experience with the model leading me to question the quality of the service. For quite a while I was unable to find a better option. Luckily, last February I found some outstanding resources to help maintain the car (RS Barn, Sunset Porsche, the expertise that is so easily obtained on this Forum) that will allow me to keep my beloved car going for some time to come.

1. The design of the rear, escpecially the red tail lights
2. the Harsh sounding engine (I'm hoping to fix that with a new catback)
3. Price and the "Best handling car in the world" award. It also needed to be ticked of my "Have to own" list
4. Parts availability

1 only car I've driven where you completely feel "one with" the vehicle / handling
2 placement of the power switches
3 looks ( in my top five favorite cars, any era )
4 that will never happen ( at least for as long as I can drive a car, anyway..)

1. I bought the car for its handling and performance. I had owned an early production 944 and always felt the chassis was underpowered. Driving this car is like flying a fighter. Yes, there were faster cars available for less money, but Porsche had the handling and the uniqueness that doesn't come with a Japanese import.

2. The potential for it to "age out" on me. This car is my daily driver and I fear that at some point aging mechanicals and electrical equipment will compel me to give it up. I'm not yet in the kind of financial situation where I can afford a weekend only car where reliability is less an issue and I don't have a "service bay" that would permit me to work on the car myself.

3. The design, the car reminds me of the Shelby Daytona Cobras and Ferrari GTOs from the mid 1960's. The hatchback design made it the only high performance car that I could easily load up with camping and fly fishing gear and head off to Montana and Wyoming for 2 weeks of camping and fly fishing. These days, I appreciate the fact that it can haul a dozen cases of wine.

4. As noted above, the only reason that I would sell the car would be if it just gets to costly/expensive to maintain for use as a daily driver.

1. Favorite thing: gotta say the style and look of the car, overall, including the interior.

2. Least favorite thing: probably the variocam system and the use of a belt instead of a chain

3. What drew me to the 968? Being the last of the lineage, I had a 944 and a 944S2 prior.

4. The only thing that would convince me to sell it would be financial hardship (or to be honest, a ridiculous amount of money offered up for it!).

Note: items subject to change as I get older and more senile!

1. Overall Balance (Handling, Power, Braking)

2. Fragile T-Belt BS belt

3. I always wanted a 911 from the very first moment I saw a 911 Targa. When the time cam for me to look I could not find the 911 that met my list of features, cost, condition, mileage etc. In the meantime, a friend gave me a magazine that announced the 968 as the most under rated Porsche ever, so I started looking for one and found my '94 Cabrio (in 2000) with 16K miles in showroom condition for a price I could afford.

4. My new girlfriend likes Ferraris, who am I to argue? Otherwise, not much...(though a winning powerball ticket would make the 968 see much less action).

Jay, ultimately that Ferrari ( btw, I detest the looks of the Testarossa ) will be cheaper to maintain than the girlfriend ..so in that sense it does offer a good value.

Re the 968's timeless looks.. The coupe which was a bit more dated (IMO) than the cab because of its hatchback, is no longer so.. in the last two years' as well as from what I've seen of next year's sports cars ( even super sports cars ) many are coming out with "hatchbacks", so BABY'S GOT BACK is in style once again

I expect even more questions of the " Is this a new "Porsh" model ? " kind.. .

Ahhh...but do you detest the looks of GF? With her in the passenger seat who cares what kind of car you're driving (she could make a chevette look hot)?

PS, I hate the limit on quotations as much as everyone else...

1. My favourite thing about the 968 is the handling. The communication and feedback I get through the chassis and steering is fantastic.
2. Least favourite would be the difficulty in sourcing parts. I'm sure they are out there though.
3. A bit embarrassed to admit, but what mainly drew me to the 968 was that it was available in Tiptronic. I had a manual 944 previously, and it was a pain as a daily driver.
4. Not planning to sell. Even if it becomes very costly to maintain or restore, I plan to keep her.

1) The way it feels accelerating out of a turn
2) Can't drive it more (no back seat for the kids)
3) Never thought owning a Porsche would be so affordable/how rare the car is
4) Holding onto it!

1. I've owned about 20 cars and all had their great points. However none felt as perfect as the 968. The driving position, steering, ergonomics of the cabin all coordinate with the outstanding handling and response of the mechanical systems to create probably the most balanced and enjoyable driving experience I've ever had (ok, I've never driven a $100,000+ car)
2. The rear end
3. The 944 turbo was recommended by a mechanic as the best dependable bang for the buck in the Porsche line. But something about the styling didn't do it for me. Then I saw the S2 cabrio and thought it was a definite possibility. Every so often I'd check the market and during one search a 968 cabrio popped up. A step up in just about every category from the impressive 944 with the aesthetics that I found attractive in the rest of the Porsche line. A no brainer. And the price seemed like so much car for the money. I challenge anyone to find a better bargain in the auto world.
4. Hope to keep for a long time.

1. what is your favorite thing about the 968?
Steering and handling - it's a wonderful track day weapon. Also, its quite rare.

2. what is your least favorite thing about the 968? (same as above)
Cost and availability of parts. You could be SOL if the wrong thing breaks.

3. what drew you to the 968?
It's a Porsche, the lines are elegant but in a funky-slightly-odd-early-90s kinda way, it's older which I think makes it cool without making any sort of economic statement, it's old enough that I don't mind replacing major components to turn it into a track car, it's more reliable than a 944 turbo, it has enough headroom for me to fit with a helmet, and it's not a 911

4. if you sold it, why?
No way... too much money invested that I would not be able to recoup. If anything it would become a track-only car.

1. Is there a more beautiful front end in the automotive world? Also, hey I can fit in it (6'5") and I cant in a 911.
2. The cruise control and windshield wipers levers are too close together. How many times have you accidentally splashed the windshield when you were trying to adjust the cruise?
3. Wherever I drive, I never see another one.
4. Lack of garage space if I found a low mile example of any of the following: a FLY Ferrari 355 GTS,'01-'02 Laguna Seca Blue M Coupe, Polar Silver RS America, Speed Yellow '94 911 Turbo S Flachbau, '76 930 in a unique color, '97-'98 C2S in Maritime Blue, '69-'70 Grabber Blue Mustang Boss 302, '65-'66 911, 924 GTS. If I could buy a house with a 10 car garage I would own them all!

1. Favorite is the overall completeness of the package - it just feels "right". Everything is within easy reach (except maybe the headlight on/off thingy, but you get used to that), and I still smile when I drive the car - and that's after 6-1/2 years and more than 100,000 miles.
2. I HATE the headlights when they're up - stupid look, good for a Miata, not for a Porsche. Just about everything else I felt was not quite right I've fixed (with the best of those kinds of fixes being the steering wheel).
3. From the moment the car was released, I found the styling attractive - and I like the "retro" interior that, to my eyes, is still modern. I dislike the cars with all of the electronic "whiz-bang" stuff.
4. I made a deal with the car - we stay together until one of us "can't do it anymore". No matter what else I have the chance to be in, I still like getting into my 968.

Fav - the feeling that I get going 90 degrees left, tail haning out, tires squeeling with that big 4-banger just hammering itself to death.

Worst - oil leakage

Draw - looks. Like ds I am a sucker for a pretty face

Sell - might give it to my son. Would take a beating financially to sell it now

1. What is your favorite thing about the 968? 1) Affordability, 2) overall looks, 3) performance, in no particular order ;-)

2. What is your least favorite thing about the 968? 1) Those darn stalk levers on the right of the steering wheel (cruise and wipers)... too close together... embarrassing at times and 2) I'm not a fan of the "frog eyes" head lamps

3. What drew you to the 968? See #1 and the 993TT was a bank account killer

4. If you sold it, why? Blasphemy!!! I'll never ever sell!!!
