Never mind

I foolishly attempted to post something that required including an image, but I keep getting that error saying I'm not allowed to use that image extension in this community.  A half hour of my life I'm never getting back...

Do this :  use the photo editing feature, and crop just a tiny portion of the original photo quadrant / edges.   Then try to post it .

When you say the use photo editing feature, do you mean on my phone, or within this forum's features?  I've already cropped the image I was trying to post to the bare minimum, so I don't see how I could crop it any more.  And I saved it as the smallest available file size when I emailed the image to myself.

I haven't tried that yet, but the photo I was trying to post is already a .jpg.

I have an iPhone 15, and I'm using an almost-new Mac desktop computer.  I've never had any problems posting images on other forums, but I've spent hours trying to do it on this one, with no luck, yet others post images all the time, so clearly it's possible.  Chat GPT gave me half a dozen different things to try, and I tried them all, and all I got was an endless string of error messages.

I meant on your phone or other device , I haven’t needed to use the forum’s sizing feature for ages … that’s weird that your iPhone 15 or Mac won’t sufficiently resize the photo to allow it to post here .   For this forum I use my iPad almost exclusively .. the moment I see the alert that the file is too big and I don’t have permission to load the photo , I crop maybe 1mm from any given side of it, and repost the modified image..100% success rate with that .

So I opened the copy of the image I've saved to my desktop as a .jpg, tried cropping it a little more as DS968 recommended, and now it's saved as a .png, which I suspect the forum will barf on.  Because I'm a glutton for punishment, I'm trying it now, anyway (I wish there was a way to try stuff out in the background, without having to display by obvious stupidity for all to see)

Yep - same error message.  Arg.

in photoshop you have to change the size to something normal - like 7" by whatever and set the dpi to 72 and you should be good to go.

I have to do it often myself.

I don't have Photoshop, and I've found that it's actually quite expensive, and since I wouldn't use it for anything other than to once-in-a-blue moon post an image on a forum dedicated to a car I sold years ago, it isn't worth it to me.  But you may have uncovered my issue:  For some reason, my computer converts images made on my iPhone to either .jpg or .png, even after I've converted them to .jpeg on my phone (I have no earthly clue with the difference is between these different formats).  Apparently Photoshop can convert files to .jpeg, and I know there are "decontented" free versions of Photoshop available that can hopefully do the same thing, so I will give some of those a try.  This is the hardest I've worked on anything since I've retired...

Okay that's weird - I don't have a subscription and it opens fine for me. Well anyways, here it is...

  • PNG, short for Portable Network Graphics, is a popular and high-quality graphic file format.
  • The PNG format is both lossless and supports transparency, making it great for webpages.
  • You can view PNG files in almost any graphic program, image viewer, and web browser.

PNG is a popular graphic file format, perhaps second only to JPG today. It has a few advantages over JPG and is easy to work with because it's widely supported. Here's what you need to know.

What is a PNG file?
PNG, short for Portable Network Graphics, is a high-quality graphic file format that you can view in almost any graphic program, image viewer, or web browser.

The PNG format is an alternative to the slightly better-known JPG file. While JPG is the format of choice for consumers, especially for storing images in digital cameras, PNG is more popular among professionals in web design, and in fact is the successor to the now largely obsolete GIF format.

Here are the main characteristics of the PNG format.
  • Format of choice on the web: Many websites rely on PNG for rendering images on its webpages.
  • Lossless: Unlike many other file formats, including JPG, PNG uses a lossless compression algorithm that results in a high image quality.
  • Supports transparency: PNG allows you to specify a transparent background, which is essential for illustrators and graphic designers. This allows irregular images, illustrations, and logos to sit on top of a background color.
  • No animation: Unlike the older GIF format (which is also lossless), PNG images don't support looping animations.

How to open PNG files
There is simply no shortage of ways to view and use PNG files — it's a common standard file format and is supported by virtually every major web browser, file viewer, graphic and photo program for Windows and Mac.

That means if you want to view a PNG file, you simply need to double-click it and it should open in the default viewer on your computer. You can also view a PNG file by dragging it into any web browser (or use CTRL + O to browse for the file and then open it in a browser).

The list of programs that can display PNG files is almost endless, but here is a short list of options:
  • Microsoft Paint (included with Windows)
  • <a class="" href="https://affiliate.insider.com/?h=7271a6050c56a4f13908ba5d677637aeff634bed507bfeb9325a8ccc8848b887&platform=browser&postID=6304ee6c77ad0bf5744e19ca&postSlug=guides%2Ftech%2Fpng&site=bi&u=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.adobe.com%2Fproducts%2Fphotoshop%2Flandpa.html">Adobe Photoshop</a>
  • IrfanView
  • FastStone Image Viewer
  • XnView

How to convert PNG files
While the PNG format is common enough that you should have no trouble using, viewing and sharing it in that format, you might want to occasionally convert it to another format. A JPG version of the same image can be substantially smaller, for example, making it easier to share.

The good news is that almost any graphics program that displays a PNG file will let you convert it to another format like JPG, and for the most part, they all work essentially the same way. For example, here is how to convert a PNG file in Microsoft Paint:

1. In Paint, open the PNG file you want to convert.

2. Click File, then Save As and choose the format you want to convert the image into, such as JPG.

3. Name the file and click Save.

You can also use a free online file converter like Convertio. To use Convertio:

1. Click Choose Files and select your PNG file.

2. In the dropdown menu to the right of to, choose the file format you want to convert it to (such as JPG).

3. Click Convert

4. After a moment, the file will be completed. Click Download and save the file to your computer.

Jay,

The reason I haven't sent you a file is because your simply posting it without context would be useless.  I need to figure out how to do it, so I can load it, and attach  my own verbiage.  It would be weird for a third party to do that for me, as much as I appreciate the offer.

The bottom line is that I need to figure out how to post images on this forum, which multiple different approaches have failed to achieve.  The problem might be on my end, although I don't understand what would be unique about my almost-new Mac and my iPhone 15, and also, it sounds like I'm not the only one struggling with this.  This isn't a criticism, as I fully appreciate your efforts to keep this forum alive, and wouldn't expect its operation to be as seamless as that of larger forums with more resources available to keep them flourishing.  More than likely my problem is some weird interaction between some setting on the forum, and my hardware.  I'll keep plugging away at it, but it's honestly been a pretty frustrating process.

The only reason I opened this thread was because I don't know of any other way to test whether my latest attempt to post an image is successful.  You can delete the thread if you want, as I've made a copy of Inked's nice summary of the differences between the different file types, and how to convert from one to another.

I would like to help more, but I am windows platform and know nothing of mac's and iphones. I don't do anything online with my old galaxy 7.

I only use my pc as I have two very large screens and a third normal sized one.

I can see much better than on my phone. I give all my plan data to the wife as she needs it to assist her daily in her job.

I am glad the info was helpful. It's the entirety of the link I sent you that you couldn't open.

If you want, PM me and I will give you an email address and I can look at the file and see if I can see anything that is preventing you from uploading it.

Is it just the file format or is it the actual procedure of attaching it and adding it to your post that is the issue?

I hope Jay doesn't nuke the post until we get you squared away and posting like a boss.

I just tried to upload a .png file and it gave me the error that it was too big to upload.

It was 11x something and 71. something dpi.

I changed it in photo shop to 7 inches wide and let it pick the height and set the resolution to 72dpi and it took it.

So I think the issue may be the size of the image being uploaded.
