I have spoken to Pete and he is sending me some diagnostic software stuff for my laptop and a cable to plug into the place where the Bosch Hammer goes. This should tell me exactly what is wrong. What I know is this:
1. Does same thing with stock chip as RS Barn Stage II chip (at least back when I had the first of this as a problem). I started to think it might be cold weather affecting the aftermarket chip but now am convinced that the problem lies elsewhere.
2. New (ie 500 km) DME relay. Old one wasn't broken but car was getting hard to start (turned out to the antifreeze in the cylinders due to the failed head gasket) - this is how I get spare parts.
3. New plug wires. (old ones I guess weren't broken after all but have been thrown out).
4. New plugs. (as above).
5. New DME temperature sensor. (as above).
6. Head was off to do the gasket.
7. Valve cover was off three times to fix leaks in the gasket.
8. seems to me to be related to vibration - worse on a rough road.
9. worse under load.
10. worse at higher rpm.
11. doesn't matter now if the car is cold or hot or the air temp outside is cold or hot.
I will need now to wait until The Porsche shop can fit the car in AND I can get it there due to snowy weather AND I can pay for whatever they charge me for the things that have now failed suddenly - my Cayenne also needs the brakes done at 155,000 km and this is a priority (I thought that they would last forever). But don't worry - I still like this car! Just having fun and getting goofy!
I may check all the "little thingies" on the weekend - I am sure that there is at least one just waiting to have the wires pulled out or the clip broken or something AND it will be the same one that is no longer available. I am very good at this type of repair work.
Jay - my "Fahvregnugen" is getting farther and farther from me. It is getting replaced with "Laird tunderin' Jaesus" - a Bugtussel expression the translation of which I will not expose you to at this site.
