Need some immediate advice
#21

I have spoken to Pete and he is sending me some diagnostic software stuff for my laptop and a cable to plug into the place where the Bosch Hammer goes. This should tell me exactly what is wrong. What I know is this:

1. Does same thing with stock chip as RS Barn Stage II chip (at least back when I had the first of this as a problem). I started to think it might be cold weather affecting the aftermarket chip but now am convinced that the problem lies elsewhere.

2. New (ie 500 km) DME relay. Old one wasn't broken but car was getting hard to start (turned out to the antifreeze in the cylinders due to the failed head gasket) - this is how I get spare parts.

3. New plug wires. (old ones I guess weren't broken after all but have been thrown out).

4. New plugs. (as above).

5. New DME temperature sensor. (as above).

6. Head was off to do the gasket.

7. Valve cover was off three times to fix leaks in the gasket.

8. seems to me to be related to vibration - worse on a rough road.

9. worse under load.

10. worse at higher rpm.

11. doesn't matter now if the car is cold or hot or the air temp outside is cold or hot.

I will need now to wait until The Porsche shop can fit the car in AND I can get it there due to snowy weather AND I can pay for whatever they charge me for the things that have now failed suddenly - my Cayenne also needs the brakes done at 155,000 km and this is a priority (I thought that they would last forever). The unofficial Three Stooges of the world of 968s. Money, time and expertise - the unholy trinity.

But don't worry - I still like this car! Just having fun and getting goofy!

I may check all the "little thingies" on the weekend - I am sure that there is at least one just waiting to have the wires pulled out or the clip broken or something AND it will be the same one that is no longer available. I am very good at this type of repair work.

Jay - my "Fahvregnugen" is getting farther and farther from me. It is getting replaced with "Laird tunderin' Jaesus" - a Bugtussel expression the translation of which I will not expose you to at this site.

since you got an intermittent variocam code, i would be focusing entirely on that system, and not looking for the odd or complicated explanation right away - once that has been ruled out by means other than a jiggle wiggle and a look see, then you can move on the the less likely peripheral causes

mine turned out to be a retracted pin in the connector - was not obvious by any means

I found a warm place today to bring the car and this is what I found. The connector that lies just behind the power steering fluid reservoir has three wires, the sheathing on each of which was cracked. This was allowing them to touch, especially when the car was driven on a rougher road. When I drove it today to the garage it missed something fierce. I pulled off the connector and taped up the wires as well as I could. It had already been taped before. Not a solution, and not even sure if I got them all, but a test. Car drove perfectly afterward. no missing and no CEL on. The attached picture, taken with my cell phone, shows the mess.     . So now what I would like to do is replace this entire waring harness, not just this connector. Anyone ever seen one, know of one, etc?

I'm not any help here, but all I can say is, Wow... Amazing how a stray electron or two can bring a car to its knees. Great find, though I bet you're pretty frustrated that the "pros" at the shop you've kept taking it back to for for all these months hadn't been able to find it. Hopefully the car will finally run up to tis potential.

Kim,

I think you deserve the "Columbo" Detective award for finding the cause of this problem! <img src="/forum/images/smilies/968/tongue.gif" class="smilie" alt="" />

As Mick Jagger once said when asked if he was satisfied:

financially - no (this was expensive and no fun)

philosophically - yes (good to get to the bottom of it but not sure if I can really fix it)

sexually - trying (did I get screwed?)

FYI - the Porsche DME-Diagnosis/Troubleshooting manual lists five faults with no assigned codes. I got a code 1-2-6-7 and this is not listed. But there is a fault called "ground and plug connections" that matches to the problems that I am having. I suspect that this is the code for this. The other un-coded faults are fuel pressure, intake system leaks, ignition system and alternator/regulator. The plug one is in the middle and all the listed faults are assigned codes in ascending order. So I am guessing that a blink code between 4-5 and 6-7 is one of the first two and after 6-7 is one of the last two.

What kind of software did you use to read the faultcodes?

just the usual blink test. I had two fault codes 1-2-3-5 (loose something on the variocam) and 1-2-6-7 (not listed in the master list of codes).

I really like the "ground and plug connections" fault code. Kinda says it all me thinks. Not! I wonder if there is a "problem with car" code too?!?
