Need New Tires -- Which ones to get?

I have only put a rash on my wheels twice ( in about 45 years ) , and not while parallel parking . Both times I was LEAVING a parking space ( adjacent to the end of the lot which has a curb, or separation of the lot by the islands also curbed, where I always try to park if its available.) .Turned right , and the second time it was a left turn, both times assuming I have already moved forward enough to clear the end / tip of the island , but I was wrong ! I ran over one of them completely scraping the wheel when it came down off of the curb, and the second time I just ran against that curb and only for one second but that was enough. Youd think I would have learned my lesson the first time and be more attentive not to repeat the mistake ... if my tires had that lip , maybe it would have saved the rash. But only about $ 100 ( IIRC ) to have the wheel look brand new again, so not too bad. Maybe be more expensive to fix nowadays, that was a long time ago .

Arrrgh ! I asked the service manager to make sure the crew mounts the center caps with the crest pointing at the valve stems and he not only conveyed that to them, but wrote it down on the work order ..I watched him do it . I did not go inside the shop to monitor every step of what these guys were doing , and guess what happened ?! Idiots ! I get the car back, look at it , each cap pointing somewhere else so and immediately call the manager . He apologizes and said the guy that was initially working on it must have handed it to someone else for the balance and remounting, but that theyll fix that for me right away , no problem. Yeah there is a problem, the job already took a full hour and I was not going to hang around and wait another half hour .. so Ill take it back next week when I return from my mini-vacation and they can redo all that .. First world problem , LOL.

No kidding , this country is so silly in that respect, I probably could get ( at least ) free tires for the “ emotional distress “ and “ post traumatic syndrome “ of having to look at misaligned center caps .

So I asked the Maserati forum if it's also a common practice to have the trident on the center caps pointed at the valve stems.   Ugh, that was a bad idea ; 100% of the respondents essentially suggested Porsche people need to get a life, if they pay attention to petty stuff like that..  :glare:

Honestly, I like mine pointing at the valve stem just because it makes it easier to check the tire pressures. Maybe it also makes the wheel more balanced and it assists with aerodynamics and handling, thereby saving fuel, combatting global warming, and reducing the risk to the polar ice caps. I just find it convenient. I also align the label on my bike tires with the valve stem for the same reason.

Is it me or do I detect a hint of sarcasm in this

Have to say I line them up too, and always put the locking wheel but opposite the valve, makes easier to find

All I know is that both city police and highway patrol officers are instructed to pull over any Porsches whose caps don't point at the stems.  Makes their heads spin trying to follow the rotation of tire to check that cap placement while driving , but the law is the law !!     Tongue

Back to the tires though ; so considering I bought the exact same brand of tires, with the old ones having still about 75% of the tread depth , and no dryness or cracks visible at all, very pliable to the touch, no flat spots, I did not think Id be able to tell much of a difference driving on the new ones. I was surprised ; significantly better ride ! So in spite of the look and feel of the old ones, ten years definitely changes their composite and ride quality.
