my turn - scrape scrape scrape
#1

so, i'm at my welder's the other day. i go to leave his place and i hear this really loud metallic "scrape scrape scrape" coinciding with the wheel rotation. it freaks me out and i stop the car. i get out, look around, and cannot find anything. i get back in, carefully move forward, and nothing happens. it has not reoccurred either.

thinking i popped a parking brake retainer spring or something, which is known to happen and create exactly this kind of noise, i pulled everything apart today. i was half hoping to find something, so i could justify replacing the perfect rear rotors with new stop tech rotors.

i found nothing wrong! now i'm trying to figure out what the heck was happening. talk about ruining a drive. now when i get into the car i will be wondering what it was, and when it will rear its ugly head and cause me a problem.

maybe it's just time to sell the car. i don't have time for this kind of nonsense.

Are you sure it was your car?

I would not worry about it until it becomes a constant. It might have been something as simple as a grain of sand or a rock caught in the caliper.

I realize I am pretty new to the 968 world, but in the 10 months I have had my 92, I have come to realize that it is simply an old car. It is not as fast as our S60, nor as comfortable as our Lexus. But, it is the more fun to drive than any car I have ever driven. Sometime the top works, sometimes it doesn't. Sometimes the brakes squeak or gronk, most times they don't, but they always stop the car. It always starts and it runs great, but it is just not a modern car, and it has its share of idiosyncrasies and design issues.

rap - no other car around. it was either my car or the ring on my finger dragging on the ground

this was a really loud metallic scraping sound, and at wheel speed. my guess is that something got jammed up in there and fell out when i stopped, but i'm just not sure.

Don't worry about it. If it is something serious you'll know soon enough!

Car noises can be so much fun.

Maybe it was a rice burner stuck to a tire from your last fast run? <img src="/forum/images/smilies/968/biggrin.png" class="smilie" alt="" />

Has to be, otherwise the noise would not suddenly stop. Just a bunch of friggin brake dust makes an annoying squeak noise, until I wash the dust off , so I can only imagine what a miserable grinding ruckus some small grain / pebble or who knows what other impurity that gets jammed in there can cause..

I got a small strip of aluminum caught in my wheel one time. I was trimming a piece to use and must have missed a sliver when cleaning up. Freaked me out, then I found it laying in the driveway. But the same thing happened in terms of sound. Is it possible a small piece of metal may have been the culprit, and it got dislodged?

ernie - very possible. at this point, that is my only theory

ryan - may happen. having now sold the SL550, to intentionally force me to drive the blue 968, for the purpose of rediscovering my love for the car. if i do fall back in love with it, then i'll supercharge the white car, give it a new leather interior, all the creature comforts i want, and a new zip out rear window top, and make it my daily driver. if i fail to fall back in love with it, i will sell it.

Brake dust shield slightly off and rubbing? Had that problem when they changed a tire once - awful scrapping wail, but a quick tap to realign and it went away....

Might be what happened to me, considering you were at the welder's, and there may have been some metal tidbits scattered about.

could be. i did see a chunk of something laying in the bottom of the right rear rim. not sure how it would have gotten stuck, as i was just at the curb, but who knows?

going to watch and see.

I had the same happen on my Mazda. Just driving along and heard a nasty scraping like the one you describe. I pulled over to check it out and found nothing. So I take off again, hear a bit of it when I started out, a bit of a clunk, and then nothing. That was about 5000km ago and it hasn't reoccured.

For what it's worth I have cross drilled rotors on that car..
