My trunk-pop won't pop
#1

Took the cab for a drive today, after a long sit in the garage, and found out that the trunk won't pop open, either with the button on the lower left front panel, nor with the key. All I have checked so far is the fuse, which seems to be fine as it also controls backup lights which are working. (I do know how to open the trunk manually but haven't had time yet.) It worked fine about a month ago.

Any ideas on what to check first?

In addition to the fuse, there is a microswitch on the rear of the actual mechanism that can fail...hope that helps.

to open it manually, open the left door (driver side over here)

then look down into the door sill of the body and note the vent

remove the plastic vent piece

there is a wire loop inside

pull it

as for the real problem, it sounds like your latch motor is having issues - could be as simple as wires disconnected, or a bad ground - once you get the trunk open, you can investigate

Here's a motor if you need one (and are so inclined to buy from there)

Try cleaning the micro switch first. I've lost the ability to open the trunk using the key but, after cleaning the switch, all worked well again.

Well, I'm working with a bit of a handicap due to shoulder surgery, but so far I can't even FIND the latch motor, other than thinking it is somewhere to the left of center. How do I get to it?

Bump.

One more try before I get started on the problem tomorrow. Any more help on finding the latch motor?

Problem solved. A bad diode on the actuator motor assy. Two bucks at Radio Shack. Life is good.

Separately, I took out my driver vent, but find no wire loop inside. I need to open the hatch but have my battery disconnected.[quote name='flash' post='46811' date='Feb 3 2008, 06:50 AM']to open it manually, open the left door (driver side over here)

I checked both sides and could not see anything. I had the battery disconnected as I am installing a non-airbag steering wheel. Could not crawl to the back and lift carpet due to the roll bar. Ended up hooking up battery and turning key to pop hatch. Did not turn on ignition. Hopefully just hooking up battery (without ignition on) does not throw an airbag code (waiting for 3.3 ohm resistor so I can button everything up.)

They are in the mail from the supplier - Catch 22, if I were to hop in the 968 to drive on down, I'd throw the code!

I just checked my coupe and indeed there is no cable. With the fact you could crawl through the cabin to get to the latch it makes sense.

Yes, the coupe has a manual emergency hatch release cable in the rear of the luggage area. But, if you

can't get to it, you are more or less screwed. I sent a cautionary e-mail on this to PCA's 968 Registry members

a few years back, but I haven't seen mention here of the problem a release system failure might present. So...,

here's the gist of my original note, may it save someone some grief.

I arrived at the track only to discover the hatch release system had failed on my '94 Coupe. Neither

the key-switch at the hatch or the button next to the driver's knee worked. I have a bolt-in roll bar and my

luggage area was full of the stuff one takes to DE events. Fortunately I could squeeze enough of me through the

bars, push some stuff aside, and barely reach the cable-pull, just in time for Tech. Had there been more stuff,

or heavier stuff, or more of me, I'm not sure what I'd have done. Probably gone looking for a thin person with

really long arms. Since the unlocking mechanism is electric, a locksmith wouldn't have been any help. Even

without a roll bar, this could still be a problem if access to the cable-pull is blocked by something too big

or heavy to push aside or pull over the rear seats and out the doors.

If you'd like to be prepared for such an occurrence, you may want to do what I did. Slipped a 2 inch

piece of thick plastic tubing, like 3/8" OD, behind the hatch's latch pin housing on the driver's side next to

the bodywork. Fixed one end of a 5 foot piece of small gauge cable to the manual release cable, ran it through

the tubing sleeve, along the driver's side of the luggage area, past the rear seatback, put a loop in that end,

and stuffed it beside the passenger seat where it's handy. It's the equivalent of what Porsche did for the cab.

Ok so my hatch release does not work. The key does not work and of course the wire pull will only release the drivers side of the hatch.
Is there a way to disassemble the locking mech?

I can hear the release try to actuate.

Any thought?

In my car the lever that attaches to the motor shaft broke. It was really obvious once I pulled back the side carpet trim on the drivers side. So the motor works fine and you can hear it when you try to open the hatch with the key but nothing happens because the wire isn't being pulled. I had to crawl in the trunk and pull on the wire that is just above the spare tire. I posted a pic of this broken part on a post about soot on my rear valence about 3 weeks ago. I bought a new lever from Porsche and now it is fine.

Ok fixed it!

Turns out the Latch post receiver was out of alignment big time. I finessed the hatch open from the inside, loosened the bolts and closed. Works fine now.
