My Next Car - part 2
#1

I was unable to reply to my 2013 topic of the same name in the forum "My Other Car" - looks like maybe that forum has been locked or closed.  Anyway, last year I did visit a few dealers and really fell for the boxster with the big motor.  It is really fast, the ergonomics are completely fixed with the X73 sport suspension and the sport seats.  The car is about as analogue as you can get in this day and age (the Elise more so).  Mike and I road tripped it over TG holiday and had a blast.  And, of course, its black.

Nice ! I thought the first generation Boxsters looked ridiculous but throughout the years they have clearly evolved in design to the point where the most recent version is nothing short of stunning ! IMHO. Sounds like that evolution was also paralleled by the car's driving prowess .

Every car I drove I measured against the 968 for fun of the drive.  Nothing came close.  I tried everything - Z4, 986, 987, 991, M3, Mustang, ATS, S2000, SL55 (owned one for 3 years), CLK 63 (owned one of those for 18 months), every Miata (owned the ND for 2 months and hated it).  I was pretty desparate to get something new cause the old girl just needed too many repairs to be a reliable daily.

I thought maybe I should get a beater corolla and beat the shit out of it on the commute, but I just like driving too much.  That's why I fell for the ND Miata trap.  Fun car on a test drive, was OK on the commute, but it was really more of a toy, a 7/10ths kind of experience, so I took a beating and sold it.  I finally gave in to the temptation of the 981 - last of the NA cars etc.  This is my third dinosaur.

RX-8 - last of the rotaries

968 - last of the front engine WC 4-banger porsches

981 - last of the NA boxsters

Anyway it is a real blast to drive.  It's topless, has a manual, is black, and fast as hell.  Ticks all the boxes.  Mike and I have argued regarding the sound - flat 6 wail vs. supercharged in-line 4 woosh.  They are both great.

Not sure what to do with the 968.  Its currently under a cover in the garage awaiting more time from me to 1) take it back to stock and sell, 2) fix it up and drive it as always, 3) strip it down, put fat tires on it and take it to Willow where it will find an untimely, but worthy, demise.

Tough decision. Maybe you should by Bob's Targa. I didn't see that on your list of cars!

The 991 version of the 911 is too big.  I drove 2 variants (flappy paddle S and a manual base) and did not like either.  They felt like highly accomplished GTs, if you will, rather than a roadster.  Interesting how the 911 and Corvette have been rivals, at least in "American's" minds for all these years.  In the case of the C7 and the 991, they felt very similar in terms of size and weight.

FWIW I uncovered the 968 to give her some excercise this weekend.  Man I love that car.  It just fits so damned well.  Too bad the maintenance got to be such a PITA.  Really not sure what to do with it at this point.  The values are so low now that the cash is not a big driver for me.  I might just have to keep it.

I like the "fit" of the 968 vs the newer 911's. I agree they feel just too big, heavy and bulky.  Now a Cayman feels more "right" to me.

Get the 968 fixed up and bring it to Mendocino this summer and really enjoy driving it!

I liked the fit of the older (987.2) Cayman. Have not tried the new Boxster, but the new Cayman felt claustrophobic and cramped to me and my wife.

So, I took the 968 to Coffee and Cars yesterday. Still fits and feels like a car should, and as expected, there was not another one there. A handful of BMW's, an old RHD Datsun Z-car from Hong Kong, a couple of Vette's, and a HUGE number of Camaro's. Which made me ponder, what does one call a large grouping of Camaro's?

We settled on an "infection of Camaro's", but I am open to suggestions.

contagion, herd, assembly, infestation and the list goes on. At the track we get these groupings of bmw's. The only difference there, perhaps, is that the drivers are generally good guys once you speak to them!!

Perhaps I shouldn't put the cart before the horse ( or is that put the car before the horsepower ? ) but it looks almost certain I'll end up buying my former boss's 2014 Maserati GT, and probably as early as next week . We agreed on tne price so that's not an issue , I'm just worried that he might change his mind at the last moment and decide to keep the car a while longer.. Otherwise, it should be in my driveway very soon , displacing the tip 968 which will likely go up on the sale block. I say " likely " , because I'm still debating whether or not keeping it might be of greater value to me in the long run as a spare ( NLA and other parts ) car for the other 968, which is a lifetime keeper, and if I should just put the tip in storage for that reason alone.

The GT is in mint condition, fully loaded with every conceivable high end option which was offered by Maserati , it has less than 14 K miles on it , dark blue metallic exterior, cashmere / camel full leather interior , and an exhaust note that raises the hair on your arms , or back of the neck...and it may raise other things as well, that sound is intoxicatingly beautiful.. pure AURAL sex . :-)

So fingers crossed , it will be my next daily driver for a loooooong time and many happy miles .

I would thing the tip is now just about brand new too :-)

Good luck with the Mas! Chick magnet for sure, the car, not Dan.

Yup the tip is practically new... the engine and many of the operating components that is, although the body, the suspension. and all those less critical things are of differing ages and degrees of wear and tear...but not all that much tear either. It's been a New Mexico and a California car , so the climate has been fairly kind to it .

Hey, " I resemble " that chick magnet remark, lol.. I am the one that makes any car a chick magnet , not vice-versa ! The Mas is simply an accessory I happen to pull off well. And I mean that of course with all the modesty for which I am so well known.

What.. ?! ;-) :-)

Ok funny stuff aside, we are disappointed and complain about the market values of our 968s , but imagine paying $ 165 K for a car and just three years later, in spite of its very low mileage and mint condition, you lost $ 100 K of that value !

Congrats Dan.  That's one hell of a daily !  I got an old e-class for the freeway slog.  About to give it all up - can't stand that traffic any longer.
