My friend’s car
#1

Started out as a 1974 911.   He’s been racing it several times a year for over 25 years now ..  engineered and built the car all by himself..  this is the latest version.  A labor of love, that car gets rebuilt and modified annually .. never ending work !

invited me to track it.    Not sure I’m ready for this..or will ever be.

Do you first have to dial in the date you want to return to??

As for giving it a go .... life's too short to turn it down, have fun!!

Yeah, I’ll have to make sure I disable the flux capacitor before driving it   Tongue

I’ve tracked only a 944 turbo and the 968, so not very confident in my ability to manage this car which although doesn’t have that much power ( it’s about 600 Hp and almost the same amount of torque ) it weighs only 2,100 lbs.   Still, I can probably handle the power once I gradually learn it,  but the biggest bother for me is wearing a helmet for more than a minute.   I can’t stand that thing on my head, after just one lap I want to throw it out the window.   Not only do I feel the visibility and mobility of my head is so restricted while driving that it’s actually more dangerous than not wearing a helmet ( yes, I know, RAP will argue with that ..) but my neck and shoulders were sore for a whole day after I did that .   For me it completely soils the “ fun” of track driving .

The muscles will respond that way but it shouldn’t be that way every time.. The helmet is also used to anchor a neck restraint device. More PCA groups are requiring this if you have a roll bar at minimum. This device should be mandatory. It saves your neck and upper back. When I hit a wall head on this device allowed me to walk away with no neck injury. You can do vision exercises to increase what you consider a restriction. Do you not wear a seatbelt because it hurts your shoulders?

Agree , i have been wearing neck braces ,for years , mostly on motorbikes , ofrroad and rally , first time , felt ristricted in movement , and the felt i could not move my head in a good way , just kept using it , and i think it saved me from ending up in a wheelchair .

After a while i got so used to it , i did not bother me at all , would never race without one , same for a helmet .

The car i would not think about it , an go for it , looks like a blast to drive , just start of slow , and know your limits , no big deal , you do not have to be the fasted guy out there , just enjoy  it .

Shoulder hurting from seatbelt ?!   No discomfort whatsoever, much less any soreness . Even five point seatbelts don’t bother me in the least bit.   Yes, I totally get the safety benefit of it, especially with the neck restraint anchor,  but the discomfort and soreness, and lack of visibility is the deal breaker for me, and that’s the only reason I have no interest in tracking cars.  And to the best of my knowledge in California helmets are mandatory on any and all tracks for any kind of driving, not just racing .  I heard that’s the case  even for autocross now, which is ridiculous, IMO .

I'm surprised PCA doesn't require it for "Parade Speed".

But seriously, I’m surprised helmets are not mandatory for driving convertibles  ( at least for the ones which do not have roll bars..).

Anyway, I’ll ask my friend what kind of helmet he has ; I’ve seen ads for super light-weight ones ( carbon fiber I think ) so if it’s one of those, and it fits me well, I’ll practice wearing it and if I feel I can tolerate it for a bunch of laps on the track, may as well take that car out for a spin ( ok, maybe not literally a spin ) .

Don’t kid yourself. They still have weight. Just less.perhaps you should beef up your neck muscles.

Just did a quick search ..they cost around $ 1,000, so yeah,  neck muscle exercises is a lot cheaper ..

We require helmets for autocross here in Nevada as well. I don't think they have ever caused a problem, but they have helped out in a couple of crashes in the past few years. Saved a Mini driver here about three years ago, so worth the discomfort in my opinion.

I was referring to the folks in Hershey with their polo shirts buttoned too tight.
