Manual vs Auto
#41

At the Pebble Beach councours and auction show this week , they had various of the same model cars which were produced in both manual and automatic ( some with paddle shift ) versions. The manual versions' pricing for all the makes ranged from a mere 200 % , to often as much as 500 % more than their automatic counterparts . The owner of a manual Ferrari 599 Fiorano turned down a $ 700,000 bid for his car, whereas all the other paddle shift 599s were going for $ 150,000 - $ 175,000. Like I said , building sports cars with anything but a stick shift on the floor and a clutch pedal is a crime ..evidently, savvy car aficionados agree !!

The other aspect of seeing all these gorgeous, phenomenal performance cars , none of which had any more than 12 k on tne odo ( I'd say 9 out of 10 have between 3 k and 8 k on them ) is rather disappointing ; why buy a car like that and not drive the hell out of it ?! Maybe I can understand purchasing rare cars strictly for investment reasons, IF they're not too much fun to drive , but buying a Ferrari or a McLaren or a Porsche , just to take it out once a month on a 40 mph drive to the beach and back to show it off is...lame ! IMHO .

Dan, that's what Ferrari was built for, you aren't allowed to drive them any more than that.

That's why we drive Porsches :-)

What you mean is, that's all the mileage Ferraris are capable of , in a period of ten years or so ; drive 100 miles, spend the next three months in the shop fixing it, drive another 100 miles, spend another three months in the shop fixing it again ....shampoo, rinse, and repeat ! :-)

Probably true with any vehicle that has a Ferrari engine as well :-)

Nah, that particular engine, and transmission  have been time tested and proven to be pretty much bullet proof...   ( fingers crossed though, it may be the same as the 968 scenario.. one car can be bullet proof, and the next / other car a disaster ..)

Just when everyone thought new cars won’t have manual transmissions any longer .

Lime geeen ?! What are they thinking, Aston Martin has always been known for subtle, classy cars , that’s the kind of outrageous color Lamborghinis are known for .

You know you have become an old fuddy duddy when one doesn’t like bright colors. Dude it’s like totally cool. Subtle and classy is code for old. Dare to be different and break out of your dark classy mold!

Nah, nothing to do with age, that color just screams : the driver is begging for attention !

But, I would gladly drive a speed yellow 968 , so Im not all that drab, lol... ( not to be confused with the washed out summer yellow, yuk ) Id also drive a Wimbledon green or Riviera blue 968 . ! See,bright colors dont scare me, lol.

And apologies to anyone here who might have a summer yellow 968...or, one of those rose / pink 968s . Hey, its all subjective .;-)

This is nuts, when I post something it eliminates quite a few of the punctuations ( any and all apostrophes, for example ..) which I type in

Is anyone else experiencing this ?

No, !!!,,,working for me.

I kinda kick myself for not buying a raspberry 968 Cab a few years before I bought the midnight blue cab - - only didn't because it was an auto. Good looking car. I like the Riviera Blue too. May someday I'll paint the '74 (914) that color.

I'm with Flash on this one. This argument reminds me of the debate on motorcycle forums when ABS started to appear on motorcycles and many argued that they were much better at braking than any "electronic nanny." Those arguments have pretty much disappeared.

When I bought my 968, it came down to two nearly identical Midnight Blue cabs. One 6 speed, one tip. I bought the 6 speed simply because it was closer (Denver vs Chicago and, having lived in Denver, I knew I'd get a reliable PPI from Storz Garage.)

I've regretted the decision ever since I bought my paddle shift Smart. Granted, the Tip is no PDK, nor is the Smart's electric clutch, but clutche pedals are the 21st century's Buggy Whips.

And I have a 550 Spyder replica. You want the "thrill of shifting,". Try a cable clutch and cable shifter. (I had all I could take of the OEM VW cable clutch and installed a Wilwood hydraulic upgrade.)
