LS1 968
Uhhhh...if you took the time to read 968LS1's posts at the beginning of this thread you would see that he says they are Cobra Misano's.
Ya know I started to read through it but 6 Pages is a bit much considering the topic doesn’t interest me.

but thanx 4 the info.

so leaving the mind numbing acceleration aside fo a moment ( and notwithstanding the technical merits and demerits of the project as belabored in this thread ) what top speed can one expect out of the renegade 968 ? do the aerodynamics and other physical limitations of this car prohibit anything in the 180+ category, regardless of how many ponies are pulling it ?

Well, with horsepower out of the way, I think the limitation on a LS1 968 would be the standard gearing. You will be limited by the max rpm of the engine before aerodynamics become insurmountable.

The seats are Cobra Misano and the are a bitch to mount. The sliders that Cobra sells for the seats do not work, despite what they might tell you. I bought some Sparco sliders and modified them to work, did I mention it was a PITA!

Regarding top speed you are definetly limited by the stock gearing and max engine RPM. I have recently discovered that the 5th and 6th gears used in the factory 968 Turbo S gearbox are the same ones used in some of the Audi 01E gearboxes and are interchangeable. The 6th gear would go from .78 to .68 alowing a 350rpm drop in high gear. I am working with a gear manufacturer to manufacture some custom 3.22 ring and pinions for the 968 transaxle. With the .68 6th gear and a 3.22 R&P the cruise RPM at 75mph would be 2200rpm. The top end would be in excess of 180mph given enough HP and the aero restrictions. In theory with stock gearing and a 7K redline you would be @ 175mph.

Tom........What is your RPM now with the setup you have now?

What would it be with the stock 951 trans?

What tire size and sidewall are you running ?

Thanks........G

I am running a 295/30/18 (25" tall).

968 transaxle @ 75 MPH 2971rpm 3.78 R&P 6th gear .78

951 transaxle @ 75 MPH 2921rpm 3.37 R&P 5th gear .86

You can put a taller 5th into the 951 gearbox, but I don't know the ratio off hand.

The standard 1983-1987 944 transaxle has the taller fifth and it's significanlty taller. My 951 racecar had a 968 transaxle and it was capable of redling in 6th, about 170 if I recall.

Geno, get ONE of the projects done will ya! No more posts until you get one of the cars on the road!

Tom..........I have been talking with david Norton from spec clutch and he has reccomended the ST2 and the ST@+ disc and pressure plate. Aloso say he has an aluminum PP available.

David stated

ST2 has Kevlar/Organic

ST2+ has Kevlar/Carbon which has a somewhat "Sportier" engagement as he called it

What your experience with these different setups??

what are you currently using in your current car?

Just getting ready to purchase the clutch and continue with finall assembly....I'll keep you posted

Thanks in advance..........Geno

This is a fascinating thread and after reading it through its already helped in my quest. I wonder what folks have done by way of fuel pumps to feed the LS1. BTW i'm picking up a 93 - 968 rolling chassis this week and I bought a 98 LS1 long block with 16,000 miles on it. I have a great little 944, but you know, not enough power. Scottie we need more power.

Was this the one in conneticut that was for sale?

What did you have to give for it?

Once you drive and LS based conversion in one of these chassis you will be hooked as i was...........

Being a tad superstitious I won't comnment on whose or how much until the car is in my mitts. I am really looking forward to the swap though and while my plans include going to higher hp I want to start with close to stock and see what i have. It is a bit of an engineering excerise as well as I have a small welding fab shop and I want to expand beyond my current product line. I though this project might provide some sizzle.

Sounds exciting Woodie, keep us posted on the progress. Maybe there is an egine transplant in the future for many of us. I would love to have the reliability and power of the V-8 with no need to ever adjust timing and balance belts or replace cam sprockets and variocam tensioners and pads. Good luck, Bob Blackwell.

plus a normal oil filter location, and who knows what other subtle (and not so subtle) advantages. I second Bob's view - if and when a major engine issue arises, I'd like to know that the LS option is past being experimental or custom.

Woodie,

The stock 968 fuel pump has plenty of capacity/pressure to feed the LS1. Be sure to change the filter if you don't know the history of the car and when it was last changed.

Reagrds,

Woodie...what part of the world are you from?

I take it you will fabricate all your own stuff and not rely on Renigade?

If all goes well do you plan to offer help/parts to do conversion for others? Just wondering as there is a ton of interest in this type project.

I hope the rolling chassis has a transmission, it might be tough to find a 968 6-speed in good order. I would highly recommend using a 6-speed because a taller 6th gear (when available) will make the conversion even more refined. Tom, please let us all know when you figure it out!
