Running a cab on the track
#1

Just wondering what experiences anyone has had tracking a 968 cab. My C4 cab was pretty unpredictable at times when I'd run it at Putnam. I see a lot of BMW chapters won't allow cabs at all without a hardtop and a full cage. (goodby free weekends at the Glen.)

Speaking of which....if the cab is just a coupe that's been modified, why couldn't you chop a coup's top + other necessary parts and make a hardtop (after removing the soft top and mechanism.) ? Cuirous if anyone's tried...

the windshield frame is totally different (including the windsheild itself, which is 60mm shorter in the cab) - it would be quite a job

but, you could end up with a stiffer car in the end, as the cab has a lot of reinforcing that the hardtop does not

so far, i have only heard of 2 DE coordinators that require full approved roll bars to run - almost all of them require something, but generally let it go as long as you have something in there - i highly recommend having something in there, and would not allow a car out there without one either - we've seen what this car looks like when in flips

racing is a different story though, and everybody requires a pretty specific design and construction

Alas, the one BMW group I instruct for at the Glen says hardtop and cage.

Good point on the windshield being shorter. Re the rollbar (sorry, chassis stiffener), I am eagerly (but absolutely patiently) awaiting mine!

I'm thinking about the front to rear stiffness that you lose on any cab. Could box tubing be installed under the car to help with that. My thought is, if I start upgrading the suspension, will chassis unpredictability become more of an issue?

they did some of that - wait until you install the brace - you will be suprised at how much it tightens up the car - unpredictability has not been an issue in mine, and i have (cough hack) a few suspension mods

on the bmw group, have they ever let the Z4 out there? i know they generally have a bug up about the 3 series cars, because they roll over a lot, but still that seems harsh - surprised too that they require both the hardtop and cage for DE stuff - i'm as safety nuts as the next guy, but are we talking about racing and not DE?

I've done four DE events at Watkins Glen in my 1995 968 cab. The organizer was TracQuest, which has been acquired by Chin Motorsports. The rules, which as far as I know are still in effect, were that cabs without roll protection were allowed but only in the yellow (novice) group. With roll protection (and I now have the Flash "chassis stiffener" installed in my cab) you can run in any group, and at the last event I ran in blue (intermediate). You can even run with the top down if you so choose. The next Glen event is scheduled for May 14-15 and I'm planning to be there. Come join - lots of track time.

To your original question - the car has been quite predictable and even instructors with their own 911s have enjoyed driving my 968 cab.
