to be clear, it is not the line that failed - it was the inferior connector in combination with the hose used - the oem hoses are "fine" as is (assuming they aren't beyond their life expectancy) - however, mixing and matching does not work - i have now replaced the tiny barbs of the stock connector with the more substantial barbs that are used today, making for a much improved line

as to pressure, the indicator only goes to 5 - the pressure can go higher - i regularly see considerably more than that when cold

the workshop manual says the indicator goes from 0 to 5 bar (printed 0...5 bar) and pressure can go from 0.6 to 8 bar(printed 0.6...8bar) - note the 3 dots between each figure, and the absence of the zero point preceding the 8 - a common misinterpretation is that the minimum is 0.6 to 0.8 - that is not what it says - the pressure can go to 8 bar, which is 116lbs - i've never seen it go that high though

Mixing components is definitely not a wise idea - there's no guarantee of a satisfactory swage.

That's really high pressure for any automotive engine. High pressure is not always a good thing...

Yes, I've seen that in the manual as well. This implies that as long as the pressure is about 0.6 bar, you're OK. On the hottest of days (I live in central Texas, remember), with the engine fully warmed up, mine reads about 1.5, maybe 1.6, at idle. Well above the lower limit, but below what I've heard others quote. Should I be worried?

it's a little low, but not horrible - i wouldn't worry, given the miles on the engine

update on mine -

i drained the last half quart out and checked it out - no flecks or specs - got the o-rings in - installed everything, took a breath and got ready

just fired her up - all is well - no damage i can see - rattled for about 3 seconds while the lifters pumped up then quieted down and went right up to normal pressure

now i'll just finish cleaning up the mess, button her up and take her for a plow this weekend

as soon as i get back i'm sacrificing a chicken or something

the chicken sacrifice for this is definitely in order, but given the broken balance belt with no collateral damage as well, you best sacrifice a cow or something bigger also.. and I hope you're test driving the car straight to the closest convenience store to buy some lottery tickets
