after doing some winter clean up, i noticed that the rear shelf inside my cab above the seat backs was loose. i think that the mechanic i had look at it last spring when i first bought the car did some work on the motors back there and just didn't istall it back in properly.
so, i went back there to fix it and found the shelf completely out of alignment. i couldn't just pop it back in, no matter what i did. so i removed the two screws just behind the door windows and janked it out. i also removed the two side panels that cover the speakers. i just briefly inspected everything to make sure it looked good. all elec conns looked clean. the top motors are hooked to the lift mech by some worm-gear-drives.
funny thing, i went to run the motor a little to see it work, and it was dead. i figured that there must be some kind of sensor in the shelf or side trim pieces that prevented the motors from running with everything disassembled.
so i put it all back together and got the shelf to fit the way it should. finally, my sub can hit hard and not make the car sound like it's falling apart!
only problem is that my top still didn't work. the motors were dead.
so i did what any good wanna-be mechanic would do, check the fuse box. all fuses are fine. only..... the window relay is burning up. so i pulled it out and looked at it. everything looks ok. i put it back in and did the next best thing.... just loosen the top bolts and put the top in manual mode. i figure it's not that tough to just push it up and down manually. a
i woke up the next morning and figured i'd try out the top again just for kicks. lo and behold, the motor was running like a champ. so i tightened up the bolts again and now the top is as good as new.
i pulled the window relay again and it's fine.
so what do i do now? i know that when you raise the top, the windows go down automatically. is there something that ties the two together that could have shorted out? maybe the relay does this?
oh, the windows work just fine, too.
the relay is about $50. i hate to replace it if i don't have to....
