Hi all! Anyone have a good source for key blanks for the original wheel lock key and cubby key? I did a search on 'key blank' on the forum, and found a few threads, but no info on finding blanks for the other two keys.
I just bought a nice lighted ignition/master steel key head and blank (original Porsche parts, $30.99 from from jaggraveyard) and my local locksmith cut it for $1. However, I can't find exact matches on eBay or other websites for these other two keys. I'm nervous about having only one wheel lock key. <img src="/forum/images/smilies/968/ohmy.gif" class="smilie" alt="" />
The manual says the car came with 3 keys for the Ignition (2 master keys with head/light, 1 flat master key), 3 keys for wheel nuts, 1 key for rear lockable stowage cubbies. The ignition key does not fit the cubby locks. In the section about the wheel keys, the manual also says (in bold) "in case of loss, duplicate keys cannot be furnished by your Porsche dealer."
Key Classics, for example, has a 1/2" shorter Porsche wheel lock key on eBay, but when I asked them, it's not an exact match for mine. They said if I send photos of my keys, they may be able to supply blanks and cut them, but that makes me nervous too, plus they're in Australia. (BTW, they do have a nice tutorial on their website about brass vs. steel keys.) I'd feel better knowing for sure I have the right key blanks (without going to $$$dealer$$$ if avoidable).
Any suggestions? Also, rather than cutting from old keys, where can I get key codes? Manual says "key numbers of the other [non-ignition] keys are embossed on the key heads." Is key number the same thing as the key cut code, or is it just the key blank code?
Thanks!

For the wheel lock key, you might try Performance Products (
http://www.automotion.com) Their Summer 2006 Porsche catalog has original-style wheel lock key blanks listed in 3 lengths: 41, 56 & 60mm, at $12.95 each. I don't know of a source for the cubby key blanks.
I had to have my wheel locks drilled out last fall, after I discovered that the tip of the only key I had was missing. I'd only had my 968 about 2 months at that point, and hadn't had occasion to use the key previously. Must have been broken when I purchased the car from the previous owner. Anyway, I asked the parts guy at Porsche of Arlington (Virginia) about obtaining a duplicate key from Porsche, using the code stamped on my broken key. No luck: apparently Porsche no longer provides this service.
Hope this helps!

Thanks for the suggestions! I ordered the 60mm wheel lock key from Performance Products. Will check out Sunset and Key Classics for the cubby storage keys. Glad to hear your feedback on Key Classics, wasn't sure they could really do much from jut a photo. I'm assuming from your comments, Harvey, that they cut the key too?
