Interior Rattles
#1

I've got a few interior rattles but one that is particularly annoying. It sounds like its coming from the rear right corner of the hatch. I've gone through 5 iterations of adjusting the hatch pins to a point where Im now happy with hatch operation. Have also removed and reinstalled the hockey sticks (re-glued) and both spoilers. Hatch rubber is in good condition, have also tried conditioning the rubber. The rattle has remained consistent throughout all!!

I've checked my glass and cant see any sign of it delaminating. Have also tried removing tool roll and air compressor from the cubby so its not that. Any ideas before I drive myself insane :-) Thx

the big glass dome can make things sound like they are coming from places they aren't. don't assume anything.

it could easily be the seat backs. the catches are frequently not adjusted properly. also, the center hinge point develops play in it, and it will rattle.

also, if you have spherical bearing drop links, they could be rattling.

Is one of your hatch shocks loose on the end, or broken/loose in the middle?

Hatch shocks arent in the best of shape!! Ive actually just had replacements delivered today although not sure when I will have the chance to fit them. Is it a one man job? Hopefully this will be it!

Ive already tightened thje catches and tried holding the seatbacks in position when driving and it isnt this. How could I test to see if its the droplinks?

no way to test other than to disconnect them and see if it goes away.

dry664, I have EXACTLY this noise (and have for years). Like you I have checked everything. If you do find the cause, please please, post what you did. I'll track you down in London and buy you a pint or two or ??? if you're successful. I do not want to go insane either.

Putting in the new ones, especially if your old ones are outright broken or very tired, can add some tension/rigidity to the glass and help with rattles.

Ive done some digging on the internet and it sounds like I need to prop the hatch open (is it really that heavy?) and then just pop the old struts off with a hammer. Is that just about it?

it is indeed that heavy.

no hammer. we don't have to use hammers on this car.

you pop a little wire clip off, and then pop the strut off the ball end. it pops off pretty easily

Brilliant. Will go hunting in the shed tomorrow for a broom or something like that to prop it open. Hopefully it will be the end of my rattle.

I'm pretty sure I changed those struts in my quest to find the rattle. Didn't help me, but i wish you the best.

BTW, I did use a copper headed hammer to knock the old tie rod pins out of their holes in the front spindles.

I've searched for the rattle to no avail. Shoot yourself or live with it. One doesn't always get to have his cake and eat it too. Although I'm not sure why!

I have found that things rattling in the passenger's foot well, where the ECU and other stuff is found, will sound like it comes from the back. There is a piece of plywood under the carpet that might be loose. Try to tighten it up. I noticed it when I had a passenger and, when he put his feet on the foot well, the rattling stopped. I was absolutely convinced it was either the hatch or the sunroof. Kim

Lear35a and Rap, you both fill me full of confidence. Good news though, I've located and fixed my second most annoying interior rattle! I would have described it as 'a metallic rasp coming from somewhere behind the passengers headrest'.

So what did it turn out to be? An old brown, disintegrating leaf wedged between the centre hinge of the rear seats!

I suggest you have someone ride with you and see if they can pinpoint the rattle. I did have a rattle coming from the RHS and found it was the passenger side seat belt banging of the side of the seat. Rattles are very annoying. Good luck..

I've been working hard to resolve the rattle but without luck <img src="/forum/images/smilies/968/whine.gif" class="smilie" alt="" />

I've tried removing everything from the trunk. Theres nothing in my cubbies or spare tire well. I've replaced both hatch struts, hatch seal, sunroof seal and hatch pins. I've greased the hatch hinges, hatch pin recievers and as above have also removed and refitted both spoilers. STILL THERE.

I'm sure my hatch glass isn't delaminating. I've adjusted the hatch pins a million times. I have noticed that one of my hatch pin recievers is a little worn and could do with being replaced.

I even let the missus drive it round a car park with me laying in the trunk. No rattle with the hatch open and clear as day with it closed. I was sure it was coming from the right hatch hinge but inspected and greased with no effect. I'm sure it must have been the dome effect of the hatch and its probably coming from somewhere else entirely.

Any ideas where to check next? Thanks

So no rattle driving with the hatch open, but rattle returns when driving with hatch closed. Sounds like it's got to be something in the hatch pin receiver area - it's possible the plastic in there is shot.

Wait, you had your wife drive you around with you in the trunk area. That's a pic I would love to have. ds will pay almost any price for that. This would be a classic DIY pic. The caption on the bottom could read " Flash said it will only take 3 minutes to fix" lol
