how to make your car slower
#1

Sigh.. have given in to compromising performance in favor of appearance. I thought I'd be the last person to allow the loss of a fraction of a second, much less significantly more than that . I installed 20mm spacers on the front wheels and 15mm spacers on the back ones. l love the appearance of the car now, tires are beautifully aligned with the body, it has a more aggressive stance ; the aesthetic of how this car should have left the factory floor, IMHO.. The bonus: nicer handling, great improvement in turns.

But on acceleration, even my butt-o-meter, which is fairly insensitive and requires major differences to register anything, feels the impact of the spacers. They weigh about 4 lbs each, mostly due to the steel

bolts and steel lug nuts which were added on, but the dynamics of their placement on the wheels makes the car feel as if I have a 100 + lbs passenger next to me. Not enough to make me take them off by any means, but just enough to bug me..

Oh well, we all make sacrifices for something or another, so I just have to learn to live with it.

I would like to see pics w/ spacers installed.

I always thought the front lined up pretty well factory w/ 17s

they don't line up too badly (though the replicas look better, albeit heavier)

i just had to go through this with the new car - i have the 993 Cup wheels on it - i opted not to add the spacers, not because of the acceleration loss, but because the father in law has a tendency to bash wheels on curbs, and did not want to exacerbate that issue by sticking them out farther into harm's way - i just had them refinished, and did not want to hurry that damage along

i am not surprised dan found the power loss to be evident - the effective mass of adding 4lbs per wheel is not too far off of his estimate - on the conservative side, it works out to be about 80lbs or about 6hp - the handling improvement is noticeable, but so it the off the line loss, and the braking loss - the acceleration loss is a lot less evident at road speed though, but the braking loss becomes more evident - the aesthetic improvement is undeniable

always a compromise somewhere, right?

I stole the rear studs and spacers off my 93 944 parts car and used the stock nuts, it brought my stock 16s

out just right and maybe added a few ounces per side. and I'm running 8" rears in front so no need for spacers. some day I'll put on some 18s but for now it looks much better and haven't noticed much of a difference in handling except for less push due to the 245s in the front.

this might sound a little hoki but it seems to work

no worries - however, i'd get rid of those nuts - the aluminum nuts are only good for about 25 ons and offs before they start losing their ability to retain torque - with the added offset, this is a recipe for disaster - that is why steel nuts are required for racing

as for the weight, that is largely based on the size of spacer - dan has 15 or 20mm - studs and all it gets pretty heavy

I was searching for steel nuts to replace the alu. OEM. I want the same look as the OEM, = long and closed nuts. But still now I only found open (short) steel nuts.

I mailed Wheel Enhacement : they don't have this. Only the open ended lug nuts are available.

So I'm beginning to guess that steel versions of the OEM design don't exist.

Watch Ebay they appear all the time. My are chrome acorn style ( closed end) steel. I believe the came from UK and were about $30 for the 4 wheel set.
