HOW do you fiix RUBBER PARTS ON A 968
#1

Hello all,

Many of the rubber parts around the outside of my 968 are coming lose.

The one on the right side front kinda between , under the light and above the bumper.

It wraps around is sticking out.

I keep pushing in back in, but it keeps coming out.

Is there an easy fix, or do you have to dismantle the car.

Thanks in advance,

Anthony

I think you're talking about the rubber seal that goes between the body and the front bumper cover. It's my understanding that proper installation requires that the "flange" on this piece be stapled in some manner to hold the seal in place. I believe doing this correctly requires removal of the bumper cover.

When I had my front bumper cover off to replace the grill pieces I noticed that this molding was not secured, just twisted and held in place by the pressure of bolting the cover back on. I believe that you can repair a loose piece by just loosening up the retaining screws & nuts and reinserting the molding and retightening everything. A little dab of silicone rubber might help. good luck, Bob Blackwell.

I've never taken the 968's bumper cover off, but on a 928 that rubber seal is stapled in place with like 40 staples.

I replaced this piece when I had my car painted. Remove the front bumper cover and stick it down with double sided tape and yes staples. Make sure you use stainless steel staples as they will rust.

Im new to the 968 forums (hopefully Ill get pics up soon, probably once I get the rubber bits on the bumper sorted, i want it looking nice!). I had a run in with a suv, well she clipped me, no real damage but paint was chipped on the bumper cover. Had it repainted but now the rubber seals between the cover and the fenders keep sliding out. They have adhesive on them but it wont keep holding. Ive looked at Pelican parts and they can order new seals (part # 944 505 531 00 and 944 505 532 00 left and right for those that need the number to order them) but I dont know how to install them as factory original. I doubt that Porsche used staples at the factory, so how did they get them to stay in. I dont want to do it any different from factory original if i can help it. Anyone got a walkthrough of the process?

Perhaps spray adhesive?

I think it's just a pressure fit. Your old moudling is at least 13 years old, so it's shrunk a bit and gotten hard over the years. The new moulding should fit and stay in place much better.

They have spray adhesive (or some other kind) on them now, but it lasted about a week and now there is dust and road gunk on the adhesive and it wont stick anymore. I had a shop install it, if I get new rubber, how can it be installed differently so that there is a pressure fit? I mean, wouldnt just having it pressed between the bumper cover and the fender make the right pressure to hold it? The moulding that is on there seems very supple and not dried out, but it may have shrunk. I just dont want to drop the 70+ for the 2 rubber bits just to have the same problem with them flapping around.

Can you post a pic of the issue? Perhaps when they reinstalled the bumper the didn't do it quite right and the gap is to large.

Sure can. Im at work at the moment, Will be home later on and will take pictures, pop on here and post them. I cant get any better angle than front on but Ill try to be sure that the size of the gap is visible. Thanks!

Mine is stapled, and it may be the way it came from the factory (although not 100% the seal has not been replaced..)

I have read that using stainless steel marine staples with a power stapler is the best method.

Double sided tape might be another possibility. Very clean surfaces are important before installing.

Surely though, they didnt install them with staples from the factory? Wont that make removal a pain in the ass/permanently "damage" the bumper cover?

I dont think they did. But how many times will the rubbers be replaced during your ownership?

I will tell you, they wont come unstuck.

So I hate to admit this. I know that if I decide to sell someday this post will be a flashing beacon of concern for a prospective NO.

I had exactly the same problem and posted about it here. Was driving the new old girl home about 400 miles over long stretches of straight flat road and the darned thing would come loose and start flapping around in circles - scared the living s&*t out of me the first time.

Anyway I did the right thing and ordered the part from Pelican or Sunset - $35 plus shipping each side. Then I realized that I'd have to pull the bumber cover and thought "oh screw this". I then noticed nice tube of black silicone caulk that I was using for a water fountain application hanging above my work bench. Blobbed a small amount into the crack, only in one place about 1" long right at the end near the hood, shoved the moulding back in and walked away. Has not budged since (about 3 months and 1000 miles or so, including some very high speed surfing.

My cab is black, so I was not too worried about making a small smudge.

Anyway I still have the replacement sitting on my work bench waiting for hte day when I decide to have the front resprayed.

I guess black silicone caulk is one way to do it. So im looking at staples or some other non-original method to make that mutha stay in there...I was hoping to keep it like new, I know if I bought one, got in there working on it and saw a bunch of caulk and staples I would be worried and have some concerns about the rest of the car. Mine was un-mollested when I bought it and I would ideally like to keep it that way. I think Im liking the pressure of the bumper cover holding it in place method best. Does the workshop manual explain how to install this?
