How do I install storage compartment behind seats?
#1

It took me a while to realize that the storage compartment in my cab was not secured to the car. The guy I bought the car from gave me a copy of the ad from when he bought the car that said what upgrades, etc., were on the car. One was a subwoofer that I never found. I suspect that it was in that compartment somehow and the guy pulled it before he sold the car and didn't want to mess with reinstalling the storage compartment. The guy I bought it from either never realized it was not connected, or did not know how to re-install.

Anyway, when I went to re-install it, the bolts spin when I try to put nuts on them. The heads of the bolts are under the carpeting. If I pull the carpeting to hold the bolt stationary when reinstalling, I won't be able to get the carpet reglued to the underside of the plywood after installation. What am I missing here?

it's a pretty crappy design. you have to lift up and peel back the carpet to expose the phillips head screws. my suggestion would be to get a couple of thin nuts, then peel back the carpet and install the nuts as jam nuts. then, put the carpet back down, and install the unit using the OEM nuts.

That's probably why it was never re-installed. That was one thought I had also (jam nuts).

Right now I just have it out. I don't actually store anything back there anyway. A stereo refresh is on my list of things I'd like to do. In searching around the site, I did see at least one picture of the front face of the unit being used to hold speakers. I may try to do something similar. I have an amp in my trunk that I suspect isn't running anything. A never-ending list of things to investigate, upgrade, or repair...

Would a T-nut work?

re: t-nut - it could

re: stereo install in boxes - be aware that the boxes do not form a seal, and so any speaker you choose needs to be a free-air type. also, you won't get tight bottom end out of any free-air speaker, so be prepared for that.

What's a t-nut?

I don't like boomy bass, so that may not work for me.

it's what we used to use when building speaker boxes in the old days. JBL used to even sell their speakers with two sets of them so you wouldn't use wood screws to install their commercial drivers. I would use the pronged ones so they will never have an issue with spinning.

Wow, I should have inquired after installing the chassis brace. Those little do-dads would have made the job a bit easier! Flash suggested I go with free air subs, so I replaced two 8 inch subwoofers with free air subs and they sound really good. I don't think you will be dissatisfied, unless you don't have enough power going to them. Good luck with it!
