electrical parts questions

Long story short - this weekend I was installing a new O2 sensor using the Bosh universal and discovered that sometime in the past the bracket that holds the O2 sensor and pulse sender connectors - bolted to the back of the intake manifold - had been riding loose down on the engine block. The heat, I'm sure, degraded the plastic connector on the pulse sender (at the flywheel) line to the DME and it fell apart in my hands! Yikes! So at present I'm driving around on a carefully-replicated-out-of-electrical-tape connector plug. Good enough for now.



Our cars are pushing fifteen years old now and I've noticed other deteriorating plastic and wiring. But this weekend's event is alarming enough to spur me into action deferred: systematically inspect and replace as many of these suckers as I can.



I've been perusing the PET and have a few questions:



   



Part 5 in the illustration above is the pulse-sender at the flywheel. The connector at the other end is the culprit. Does anyone know of third-party sources for these connectors? I'm checking porsche prices now but would rather spend pennies on a plastic part that I can wire myself than spend a hundred bucks on the complete sending unit.



Also - parts 17 and 12 are not labeled in the list. Anyone know what these are?



While we're at it - what is part 21?



   



   



I'm looking into replacing the alternator harness which is deteriorated on my car. Can anyone vouch that the part labeled 24 and 26 goes on the end of that wiring harness? The same shroud is used at the starter as well. I'm not sure what it is, but it looks like a rubber cap for the end of the harness.

Apex,



I suspect what you are calling the pulse sensor is the rear Hall effect sensor. 944s had two of them in this location and they are indeed brittle with age. The good news is that there are BMW sensors for half the price that work (the cable is about 6" longer so I looped it to shorten). Recently there was a group buy of front Hall sensors (under the distributor cap) and part of the package was installing new connectors. The seller had to buy extra connectors and may still have them available. I glued one of these connectors back together with J-B Weld, but an all new connector is the best alternative. It's easy to tell when the rear sensor fails, the car doesn't run. Unfortunately this connector and the pins inside are not readily available as was discovered during the group buy. Do a search to find the whole discussion and to contact the seller.

hey sp thanks for that tip re the bmw part - I've been trading emails with the poster here who put the front hall sender group buy together (brett968) but we've not been able to ID these sub-parts yet.



do you have a part number for the bmw sensor? new from porsche for this pulse/hall sensor is $115 or so from Sunset.

Depending on which PET your looking at, generally if a description/part number is not listed it may be the European [non-US] or ROW version. I found this to be true when I was looking up CS parts.

The engine speed sensor (part 5 in the first PET diagram in this post) is the same as the hall sensors used in the '44's. The Bosch part number is 0261210002. This has the three pin AMP connector.



I was able to source the harness end of the connector from an electronics supply house. I don't have acess to the records or source (on my other PC back in MI) but it was one of the places that mentioned in the hall sensor group buy thread here. One caution when byuing the AMP connectors - you need to buy the housing, pins and wire seals individually (hall sensor connector requires 1 housing, 3 female pins, and 3 wire seals)



Bavarian Auto (bavauto.com) seems to have the best price on the sensor- I think it was $58

The ID numbers on the actual parts are:



The 944/968 speed sensor is Bosch part # 0 261 210 003

The BMW sensor is Bosch part # 0 261 210 002



When searching for these at on-line parts houses I found them listed as:



The Bosche Number for the 968 sensor is F6010-12761 List $194.53 Disc. $105.35

The Bosche Number for the BMW sensor is F6010-12760 List $96 Disc. $59.94



I ordered one of the BMW sensors for the 944 from AutoParts Warehouse.com, I received it in a day. Price was $55.26, shipping was free on orders over $50.
