Hi y'all
#1

Hi all,

I'm originally from Michigan/Minnesota but have relocated to Houston. I'm 43 with two young kids and seeking a good all-around coupe for auto-x, track day, fun with maintenance, and maybe a social event or two.

Honestly I've never been much of a Porsche guy (can't afford anything rational from that Italian company), but the PCA seems like the crowd I would have the most in common with.  Current car is an Alfa Romeo Spider, which is fine for social, but not so good at anything else.  Good group, though, the Alfisti.

Other cars I am considering include an 86 GT (little in common socially, but neat machine), and an LS1 swap Miata.  Not sure what I would encounter in the LS swap Miata world, but I think they would be a bit more my speed.  BMWs - meh.  Corvettes/Camaros/Mustangs - again, neat machines, but not really my crowd.

Seek to lurk here to help me ultimately make up my mind.  I've always liked the 968 aesthetics, and I can afford one.  Are they fully depreciated?  Are they in the air-cooled 911 zone I perceive where the pricing is all over the place because dealers are fishing for a mid-life crisis?

Matt

Welcome. At 20 plus years depreciation shouldn't be an issue. If an air cooled fanatic hears you comparing the 968 to a 911 you will be shunned for life from the 911 crowd. We on the other hand will just wait till you come to come to understand the truth.

Haha.  I remember doing a bit of pricing for AC 911s in the late '90s and forming the belief that the prices were unusually variable - that there must be a number of folks willing to overpay, and as such a few dealers were doing some ambitious anchor pricing.  Perhaps it's an artifact of the 911s brilliant marketing run.  Those fishes are bigger than me and I'm happy to stay out of their creek.

All I want to do is find a group of people like me, who like to talk too much about cars, spend time optimizing their cars, and spend time optimizing themselves driving.  Bonus if the engineering is innovative and there's a place for craftsmanship.  My suspicions is that these are depreciated, and they'll just start appreciating.  Never hurts to not lose too much money on toys.

I got some advice from an amateur racer that the PCA was the best club in the country.  It presents itself as a nice level-headed forum to indulge my interests, without all the newb dive-bombing or other obnoxious behaviors.

So here I am, starting to research.  Thanks for the opportunity to learn.  Targeting a purchase sometime in early 2020.  My company is going through some M&A at present, and I'm not looking to add to the family until the dust settles.

This community is nothing short of amazing. Regardless of the problem you have, someone on here has had the same one and they might have even figured out a solution or a work-around. I joined the forum before I bought my car so I could learn about what issues to look for and what things to inspect prior to purchase.

This place will save you money and aggravation, as long as you don't discuss tires, oil, or politics. Address those topics at your own risk.

The PCA is a decent place to meet good people. Like all clubs there are good and bad people and points. HPDE is well run and well organized with safety being a predominant feature. This club is the same. Perhaps more help is available because we are a small group of people who love a very limited production car. Enjoy.

Welcome. Your Alfa ownership is a positive indicator of the degree of masochism needed to be a successful 968 owner. Smile

Ive got a couple little ones too who love riding in my car. If you end up buying a 968 I can share some pointers on installing a forward facing car seat. Giving that youre considering an LS Miata it doesnt sound like youll be doing a lot of family road trips in a coupe. It is though a TON of fun to share the ride - safely - with the kiddos.
