Hi All!
#1

I just picked up a '93 cab, and 3 days later a bin toppled in the garage overnight crushing my hood. I'm in repair mode now!

Yeah, that's no way to start your ownership experience. I live just up the road in Prescott.

Thanks, it sucks for sure! 30 years of driving, and this is the first time I've ever been "responsible" for denting my car. Hagerty is also fantastic insurance; $4400 in repairs and they didn't even blink before cutting the check. I'm on the fence whether the body shop should spend 20+ hours trying to save my stock hood or pick up something like this: http://www.gt-racing.com/968-hood-part-384/Does anyone have any experience with GT-Racing?

Is that carbon fiber?

If I recall correctly, the fit on those is pretty crappy. So, unless you are planning a race car only, probably not a great solution.

JMHO,

Hi and welcome to the forum. Sorry to hear about the damage to your car. Maybe time to think about two rows of louvers in the hood. I know it gets plenty hot where you live and they would allow more heat to escape. $4400 for a hood sounds a little high but any time you mention Porsche the price is sky high.

Cheers,
Larry

If you had an early 92 with the recessed badge, I would say save the hood. Absent that, I would go with a nice salvage yard hood and have it properly prepped and painted. I am not a fan of bondo in hoods because of the heat and the vibration induced cracking. Given the number of people parting out old 968's because they are worth so much in parts, I would expect that a good hood should be easy to locate.

Welcome & sorry to hear about the hood.

For a street car, I think a steel hood is the good choice.  You can get a used one on e-bay for $300 (plus $100 for shipping), but it'll add to the prep work time/cost.

I had body work done on mine last year - - fender - - went with a new one from Germany.  More $$ and more time to complete, but I'm very pleased how it turned out.

Thanks for the feedback, the GT Racing hood is kevlar/carbon fiber reinforced fiberglass, and after speaking with the owner Joel I'm keeping my options open until I find a good steel one. Any of the ones I've found on Ebay are damaged nearly as bad as mine, and I've yet to see a clean OEM hood. The closest I've come so far is a pretty nice one but the top corners are bent from years of it standing vertical in a warehouse. I'm absolutely impressed with the conversation I had with Joel though, since he'd have to lay up a new hood for me anyway (none in stock) he offered to reinforce some areas and put extra work into making an one-of-a-kind version for me. So, we'll see what happens if I can't get my hands on a clean one!

I have a fiberglass hood on one of my 914s.  The weight difference for a street car is meaningless & it's too light for the stock hood springs.

If/when I ever get it repainted, I'm going to put a steel one back on...that's my two cents.  However, a Kevlar/carbon fiber hood is a very good choice - - best wishes with getting it put back together.

I ended up going with steel, Joel at GT Racing hooked me up with the OEM Guard Red hood he used for his molds! So, I bought a front splitter from him to go along with it - gotta support the good guys who go the extra mile to make a customer satisfied!

Sounds like a great solution. I'd like to see the splitter when it's installed. I can't find one that clears my driveway entrance.
