Good news: I put in my KLA strut brace which in my car leave plenty of clearance to the hood but almost none to the engine. No hood issues! Yeah! <img src="/forum/images/smilies/968/smile.gif" class="smilie" alt="" />
Bad news: I didn't have a torque wrench, so I
overtightened the nuts on the strut mounts and
stripped half of them. <img src="/forum/images/smilies/968/sad.gif" class="smilie" alt="" />
(In my defence, the strut mount studs are barely long enough to accommodate the thickness of the brace mounting bracket. And the brace mounting brackets had to be slightly conformed by tightening the nuts. It was just hard to know when to stop. OK that's not much of a defence....)
What now?
- Is there a way to fix my strut mount by replace the studs?
- New Porsche strut mounts are very expensive.
- KLA has an alternative strut-mount
KLA Industries Has anyone used it? Like it?
- If I have to replace it, should I go stock or is there something better....
Nothing like saving money by doing things yourself.... <img src="/forum/images/smilies/968/dry.gif" class="smilie" alt="" />

[quote name='flash' date='Aug 4 2005, 11:10 AM']ouch - i had that happen to one of mine - fortunately i was able to rethread it
did you strip all of them?
my best suggestion for the cheap fix, if your mounts themselves are ok, and you didn't strip them too badly, is to compress your spring, lower the mount, rethread with a die, and use new nuts

That is definitely outside of my DIY skills. (Apparently so is mounting the strut brace!)
I have my car in the shop right now, and my mechanic was looking at doing something like that. But I am worried that the labor will end up costing almost as much....
I found stock replacements here:
968 Strut Mount at Auto Parts Warehouse Looking at the very small picture makes me wonder if the studs can be completely removed and replaced with bolts?

If I have to replace the strut mounts, should I go with camber plates? Paragon seems to have a couple to choose from, and they don't seem any more expensive than replacing the original strut mounts.
But is that too harsh for a car that is my daily driver?

What about having the old studs ground off and new ones welded into their place?

There is a guy here in town I have been anxious to see that specializes in suspension and used to race a 968. He only works by appointment, so it will take awhile for me to get his take on my self-made problem.
I just hate having to blame myself. But there just doesn't seem to be any scape-goats I can get my hands on...

I happen to have an extra pair of strut mounts - bought them used but never installed. If you want them send me an email... <img src="/forum/images/smilies/968/smile.gif" class="smilie" alt="" />
