Help ! S.F. Peninsula - Bay Area mechanic
#1

My mechanic is retiring at the end of this month and I'm in a state of panic !!    In addition to the usual 968 quirks which already puzzle most mechanics who think the car is practically the same as a 944,  I have two supercharged 968s  that are surely to be screwed up by anyone who does not have a great deal of experience working on these cars and also happens to be afraid to touch anything with a SC on it,,.

The only shop of which I'm aware within a < 25 mile radius of where I live who has worked on several 968s  and has a reputation for excellence, and trustworthiness is Modderman Motors  in Mountain View.

Any other mechanic recommendations ?  The preference would be the mid- peninsula, but anywhere  between San Bruno to San Jose would work in a pinch, although I realize beggars can't be choosers, so if I have to cross the bay to Hayward, or Fremont, absent any other choice,  I guess the colossal inconvenience of doing that will just have to be something I must get used to.

I suppose you could just quit breaking your cars.

My mechanic in Reno had a shop for around 15 years in Crockett. He still maintains a small clientele in the bay area and travels there a few days a month to work on their cars. He was Porsche trained in the 1990's, so he knows these cars well.

Let me know if you want his info. He has done good work for me at a fair price and he does know the 968.

Haha, if only I had that ability ( not to break cars ) or ability to fix them...

Sure, please send me his info ( PM ) so I can at least connect with him and find out when he's in town, where the shop is located, etc..

Thanks.

The great fear of all 968 owners - retirement of the only guy who knows how to fix your car......

My mechanic is starting to make noises about getting older.  I'm planning on chaining him to his work bench and sliding food under the door.......

this is exactly why i bought the site when i had the chance, and why jay jumped in.  it is also why it is organized the way it is, in encyclopedic fashion.  this site will soon be the most important resource for 968 owners.

Yup . Particualrly for those of us with no mechanical aptitude whatsoever , or even sufficient knowledge to determine whether or not a new mechanic is feeding you a line of b.s. , this resource is invaluable .

I've been using Bauer Porsche in Oakland for years. They are very familiar with 968s.

not that far really.  i had to take my cars to anaheim.  that's about the same distance.  i realize that bay area perspective says that 15 miles is a long way, and that in socal we drive a lot more without thinking about it, but still, i thought i would offer that perspective to let you know that you are not alone.

There's maybe about a two hour window in any given day when that drive across the bay to Oakland, or back from there , can be accomplished in less time than it would take me to drive to Paso Robles nearly 200 miles away ( on a Sunday , lol )

Sure, public transportation ( BART ) from point A to point B and vice versa offers a more expedient option , but that's half of a solution ; then you have to deal with getting to and from the respective Bart stations and that's bother PITA just by itself . At the rate this friggin' tip 968 develops issues, that commute could be a weekly event ! No easy answers here, but it pretty much has to be somewhere on the peninsula , unless we're talking about major repairs like a transmission rebuilt or stuff where I could leave the car at the shop for a substantial amount of time and just get away with making that trek maybe just once in great while .

same here going to anaheim.  it can take a half hour with no traffic, or 2 hours with traffic.

you could always save yourself all of that hassle, and just factor in a tow truck.  the car can go to the doctor without you.

lol, true but I can just imagine the conversation :

Tow truck driver : where do you need the car to be taken ?

Me : across the bay to Oakland .

Driver : so what's wrong with it ?

Me : needs new brake pads. . I'll call you again next week when the tail light burns out ..

+1 on Bauer. I've also used them for years. It's reassuring when you drive into their shop and actually see 924's, 944's, 928's, and especially, other 968's all over the place.

Absolutely Hi-Tec in San Rafael. Have used them for all my Porsche needs over the years (944,928,968) Deven and Dana knows a 968 (and for that matter all transaxle Porsches) in and out. Incredible work and you get a free rental with big jobs.

Coll, thanks all !   I think I have enough go-to places now and I can either stick with just one, or alternate, depending on the nature of the job .
