Odometer needs to warmup before working
#1

For the last year my odometer/tripometer has needed a warmup of several miles before it starts working. If the car is hot it works fine. Back in 2007 I replaced the small gear after it quit working altogether, caused by broken tooth. Today I removed the speedo and saw all the teeth intact, I disassembled and reassembled the gears and stepper motor cylinder, even cleaned and lubed the tiny metal shaft the large gear is on but the problem was still there on test drive this evening. Any ideas?

Could the hall sensor be faulty? I cant think why it would start working when the engine warmed up at the speedo itself. To me it points to the signal source therefore an electrical issue with the sender. Is it securely attached for instance? This is one of the sensors that has had mention on the forum in the past and with its close proximity to the engine and the heat that entails it would be a good place to start looking for a fault. Cheers.

Had the same thing for a while ,after a few months after cleaning stoped completly .

Bought a complete instrument cluster and replaced the whole speedo after i had the odometer set to the current miles of the car .

i would look at the connectors at the back of the cluster. it sounds like you are not getting the signal. is there anything else in the cluster not working? are all of your idiot lights functioning?

AJG- What is the hall sensor?

Flash- Everything works, although after putting cluster back in now the antilock amber light stays on for about a minute, then extinguishes after driving short distance...I'm leery about pulling the cluster again in case some other ancillary gremlin appears!

The reason I pulled the cluster this time was two-fold: replace all bulbs and inspect the odometer assembly. I disconnected the battery before removing the cluster, wonder if that had anything to do with antilock light (although it did not the other two times I pulled/reinstalled cluster).

To close this out, I pulled the cluster again, replaced the larger of the two odo gears, and that fixed it. I had replaced the smaller one before so didn't see any need to spend on that one again. I guess the larger gear had gotten soft and was sticking. Also after disconnecting battery again and leaving it disconnected overnight the antilock light issue went away. Thanks for the help!

hmmm - if you had an antilock light, you may also have a speedo sensor issue. i would get in there and clean that. they are well known for picking up brake dust and failing like that.
