The biggest reason, as I understand it, is that when (not if) the dual motors get out of synch, they will twist the main bow, causing the bow to break and possibly the broken ends to go through the canvas. The bow is NLA, so they have to be welded and repaired using reinforcements and bonding agents. The top is so easy to drop manually, I have not missed having mine disconnected for years. The only problem is that the motors "pull" the top down and with them disconnected you have to push it down to get the cover on.
Strangely enough, having become accustomed to Britisn tops, I am not bothered by the manual aspect. It almost seems like an old-school preparation for a top-down drive.

Not that I know about, but Im sure that there are some maintenance issues around the hinges and folding bows
They must need some kind of lube after 30 years, all the rubber parts should get a good coating of gummi fledge at least 2 or 3 times a year
https://www.micksgarage.com/d/dash-rubbe...gIRUvD_BwE
Also good on coupe door seals and hatch and sunroof, cuts the squeaks down a lot and makes all the rubber bits last longer
The last time I looked the folding bows were still available but that was a couple of years ago, and they were $900 a side
I have a pair of broken ones in the shed, they are made of magnesium alloy so real hard to fix

Well I just had a check, the main folding bows still available
941 561 201 11 and 941 561 202 11, at $907.00 each,
don't do what a friend of mine did, drive off and give it large without the roof locked down correctly, wind snapped it open, shattered both bows, 2K to fix
used a few different makes of Gummi Pflege, found the original German one to be the best
