headlight bulb replacement
#1

I have limited access to post due to being a 968 forums newbie so I'm posting here, hope nobody minds,I was severely scolded on a MB site for posting in the wrong forum, go figure!

Anyone have any good recommendations as to a good headlamp bulb replacement? Knock on wood, I have 54000 mi with original headlights still going strong, however I would like to brighten them up, legally. Is Hella or Piaa a good choice, or has anyone had any experience with Luminics Krypton Titanium white headlight bulbs, sold through JC Whitney?

most people have found after a while that any other bulb also brings with it unwanted glare - the key to success is staying out of the blue spectrum of light - some of them may seem "brighter" but they doesn't actually help you see better - there is a lot of long boring data out there on this, but that is the bottom line

the best thing you can do is to make sure you don't have any "fogging" on the lens - this is very common, and cuts down a lot of the light that would be thrown - it is gasification of the inside of the plastic housing - it can be removed to some degree by scrubbing on the inside with a brush - be careful not damage anything else in there - it will require complete removal and disassembly of the headlight

also, a good headlight adjustment will help a lot - the low height of our headlights makes it difficult for them to throw very far forward

Out of the three cars my wife and I have, the 968 has the best low beams by far.

2004 Honda Pilot
2004 Jetta GLI VR6
1994 Porsche 968

I've always been impressed with the 968 headlights and how good they are compared to the other cars I have owned. As far as I know, the bulbs I have in the cab and had in the coupe are standard (nothing special).

thnx flash, i also just finished reading the sylvania silverstar postings after doing a search. i agree they don't last long and i also have the ultra's on my denali, and they do make a diff. it's amazing that my original headlights are still good after all those miles and years. wonder if a superior electrical system in porsches has made a diff, also i don't do a lot of night driving with my car, and seem to use the running lights and fog lamps more!

i have the silverstars in my denali too - better than the OEM bulbs, but the reason is the light design - the blue isn't great, but it's better than the piss-poor light it came with - a better solution would be to go to the non-denali non-projector lights - i just haven't done it yet

my first set of silverstars lasted about 20 hours - this set has lasted longer - not sure what's up there

our lights are not designed for those bulbs though, and the blue light will bounce around and scatter a lot on the ground - the lower location won't be good for blue light

if you wanted more light, i'd start with playing with the focus, and then work on altering the supplementary lighting to enhance peripheral vision

I just use the Sylvania Halogen Plus bulbs. I have aimed both the driving lights and low beams up really high - Probably not legal, but I can freeze a deer at about a mile away!

I hit a deer with my other pop-up headlight car some years ago (200SX - man what a POC). Guess I needed stronger bulbs, or better brakes

yellow light would have helped you see the deer sooner - same thing with turning off your dash lights

There was an interesting article in the NY Times today 7/15/2016 regarding headlights and how poor they are. The insurance companies are now making it harder for cars to get a 5 star rating if their headlights are judged poor. I find most cars are lousy as you cannot read a reflective road sign from 300 feet on low beam nor can you see anything towards the left of the cars lights. It almost as if I am driving in the dark even with the headlights on. Most of the time I drive with the high beams on as they are marginable better.

Yup. same here and very annoying because I drive with the high beams on roads without street lights but have to click them off and on constantly ( soon as a car approaches from the opposite direction, or, even if I get within a relatively close distance to the car in front of me.. ).

any suggestions of how we as a community can improve our headlamps?

what is wrong with our headlamps???  they are incredibly bright, well spread, and a good color (though yellow would be better).

one problem with today's headlamps is that they are the wrong color.  blue is NOT a good color for the human eye.  it "seems" brighter, but in reality it is only because of the increased glare.

another problem is LEDs.  they do not provide as smooth of a light pattern, which is difficult for the human eye as well.  especially in the periphery of the field, it is very difficult to see clearly.  you will find that you can see those signs much more clearly at night, if you don't look straight at them, but rather keep them in your peripheral vision.

the real issue is with the rods and cones of the human eye.  our night vision does not utilize the cones like our day vision does, so the clarity and acuity is reduced.  further, at night the human eye loses capability toward the lower wavelengths.  this makes the blue lights seem like glare, as it is trying to use a light color to see that same color.  the result is blurring.  yellow light is much better. this is also why red dash lights are best. the eye does not have to adjust as much in red light.

" Incredibly bright ?! ". Put down that wine, you've had too much already ( ok, maybe there's no such thing as too much when it comes to wine , but you get the point ..) . The 968 low beam headlamps SUCK ! They' re not even half as bright as the headlamps of my other cars . And our vision becomes poorer as we get older so for us " seniors" , headlamps technology needs to to keep up and adequately light up those roads for us !!
