Has anyreplaced the 10 speaker configuration in a coupe?
#1

I would like to replace the 10 speakers in my coupe. I posted the same back in April 10th 2016 but got no response's but lots of views. Has anyone done it yet. And is there a trick to removing the rear grills that cover the rear speakers?

Also any recommendations on an amp that would fit under the passenger seat. My seats have the 8 way adjusting mechanism. Also any recommendation on a radio that can been seen because of our strange views. I would want a radio that has a CD player in it. There is another thread that someone recommended the Blaupaundt Brisbane, but that unit does not have the CD.

Not done that yet. I did see in the parts manual a small screw in the upper rear cornet of the back seat speaker grills, that was the only fastener I saw. Try removing that screw and see what happens with removing the grill. There are impedence specs in the service manuals for all the existing speakers, but matched to the original radio. I have the factory amps so no advice there. Check the parts manual, might be some deminsions there to help with sizes that would fit.

The PO replaced the radio with a Pioneer model, I can look up if you are interested. Has a CD and iPod aux jack. Not too bliny for the interior, but not as matching as the new classics radio, don't know what it cost.

Thanks for the reply. I currently have a Pioneer radio, with a CD player built in but do not like the look.  I was hoping someone had done the redo and would have size or specifications on the speakers,

That new Porsche Classics radio looks sweet, but $1200.....

Pages 312 313 of the parts catalog lists the speakers and amp, but not the dimensions. Call a dealer and see if they have more info on sizes or measure the ones you have now. I know I've seen discussion on the site on speakers before, so try searching. A good audio shop can find speakers that match.

I just called Rockford industries(I might have their name wrong) who was the distributor for Blaupunkt at 800-962-4412 but they had no information on the 968 regarding speakers or head units, other than a Model called the Toronto may fit and work. Also they told me that Blaupunkt is now in limbo as to who is going to me the USA authorized Dealer, as Blaunpunkt may be withdrawing from the US market.

I also called Alpine 800-421-2284, Tech department who also had no information on the 968

Does anyone know if the 944 s2 had a 10 speaker system and do the 944S2 speakers fit the 968's

Did you try Crutchfield? There is a lot of info on their website too.

In my experience, the stock units are typically underpowered at both the input and output sides, meaning the wires are too small to carry the load from more powerful amps, and the wires from the amps to the speakers are also too small for good sound. With that in mind, in my cab I just replaced the head unit with a nice Pioneer and the rear speakers with some nice 2 ways, and called it good. Why? because the cloth top and the speaker placement make getting good sound almost impossible, and frankly I prefer the sound of the car to the sound of mediocre audio. I keep my cell phone linked to the stereo when I drive so I can listen to music and converse if necessary, but that's about the limit of the stock stereo units in these cars.

To be fair, I am unfamiliar with the more high-end audio that these cars had as options. With my simple base system there is not a lot to be thrilled about.

the most important thing to do is dynamat the heck out of the car.  that will make a larger difference in the output of the system than any component change

Yes I called Crutfield first. They had no information on the 968 at all. They did have information on the 944 S2 1991 model. Anybody know if the 944 S2 was the same or different in regards to speakers? That seems to be the stumbling item as the speakers have limited room. Getting a head unit and amplifier would be simple if one knew which speakers one could buy. As I mentioned my 968 is a coupe not a cab, the speakers may be different because of mounting room?

I again called Crutfiel and while they have AM/FM/CD radios and amps, they have absolutely no information regarding speakers. The only thing they knew was that there was very little clearance behind the speaker mounts, which would force one to mount the speakers forwards to allow for clearance.

Hey Flash,

I went to the DIY section but nothing there regarding speakers or making a rear deck box? So what are you talking about or where is it. Sounds interesting. I do woodworking so making a box should not be difficult.

I compared part numbers in PET between 968 and 944S2 speakers.  Two part numbers were the same between models, the rear woofer and the front mid-range. The other 3 sets had different part numbers.  Don't know if the speakers are still the same, but the part numbers aren't which causes me to believe they aren't.

PET doesn't say anything about dimensions.

Can you list the part numbers? That would be helpful.

If you order speakers from Porsche they will have the part numbers, doubt the part numbers would mean anything to another supplier.  Have you downloaded the Parts manual from Porsche (free) for the 968, everyone should have it for lots of reasons.

Yes I have the 968 and you are correct it is invaluable to have a copy on the computer. But I do not have the copy of the 944 so I was unable to compare the two.
