Finally giving up on factory radio
#1

Hello, I am new the forum..... I have a 93 cab and finally have to give up hope on the factory radio. Actually not sure if it is the radio or the speakers ? The sound crackles and eventually cuts out. Anyway, was either wondering if anyone had a fix for this or could give a good recommendation for an aftermarket sound system that would fit the style of the 968 appropriately.

I bought a Kenwood Model KDC - MP345U. cost is about $160 installed from CAR Toys. This is not a High Def Unit as that type of radio kept cutting out on me. It is just a normal radio with a single CD player built in. Also has a clock which is nice if yours does not have one. Sounds great even with my 10 speaker system. Built in bass midrange Treble adjustments, balance and fader. Good all around unit.

note: our cars are wired backwards from others stripe on the wire is NEGATIVE - failure to wire correctly puts the speakers out of phase, and will result in weak bottom end

I didn't know about the reverse wiring. I'll be darned. I'm having a problem with very weak AM reception around town. The FM seems to be OK for the most part.

The radio I had installed was done by a local car stereo store here in Eugene. It is a Kenwood eXcelon with Bluetooth. The Bluetooth works very well, though trying to use the radio's menu system to dial a call isn't a great option as you have to look down at the radio to see either a phonebook entry or dial via the phone. The Bluetooth connectivity worked very well, though, in that it automatically recognized the phone and downloaded all of the information from the phone.

Good luck with your purchase.

weak AM reception is most often the fact that the AM antenna booster is not connected to the B+ of the battery.

Wiring Tip:

Hook everything up with simple finger twists. If you still have the quick disconnects that Porsche used between the speakers and the deck - keep them - they are very handy if a bit bulky.
Put cables back on battery.
Play your stereo and check that front/back/left right all work correctly (easy to get those mixed up)
Check to make sure it sounds reasonably basey. If its really flat then check that your wires are not backwards as Bob notes above.

Once you are happy solder everything up, run the wires, and install the deck/speakers.

This is a simple application of "measure it twice, cut it once"

Simple way to check polarity of speakers is correct:

Attach 1.5v battery to speaker leads. If the cone pushes outwards, then the positive speaker connection is the one that is connected to the positive side of the battery. If the speakers moves inwards, then wiring is reversed. Sometimes this is an easier method if you are not removing speakers, or the wiring colour changes between the head unit and the speaker.
