Porsche Classic Navigation Radio
#1

Guys,

I broke down and bought the new Porsche Classic Navigation Radio, and had it installed by the dealership where I bought the radio.  I have to say that I really like the look of this unit, it replaces the CR-1 which was original to the car, and did not work very well at all.  I have yet to actually use the navigation feature, so I cannot say how good or bad this works, but this was WAY DOWN on my list of reasons to get this radio, so even if the navigation is crap, I am still over-the-moon happy with the unit.

The sound is good and the look is good, but I am already starting to think about speaker replacements to get the sound to be even nicer. Can someone tell me the trick to access the rear speakers in a six speaker setup?  I am guessing that the grills pull off in some way, but I am scared to force it too much, so any guidance would be appreciated?

Nathan

That does look good! When they first came out the price was insane, did they ever regain their sanity?

If by "did they ever regain their sanity?" you mean was the price was below $1250, than the answer is no.  In my book , the price is at least 3x the equivalent radio, if not 4x.  What hooked me is the understated "Porsche" look.  I was considering other aftermarket solutions, but I was always put off by the lights and the colors and the gadgets that come on even the most sedate Japanese unit.  I am sure that the target market for aftermarket head units is 20 somethings, and the manufacturers seem to be giving them what they want.

Anyway, I swallowed hard (really hard) and did what I thought was best for my baby, and gave her the radio she always deserved.

Keep us posted on how it performs, especially navigation and ipod interfacing. How does it use the existing amplifier in the 10 speaker system? I'll look thru the manual and see how the grills are attached.

The iPod interface seems to work very well.  There is a "media box" which includes a USB for iPod, a second USB (I assume for other USB music sources), and an aux-in.  I had them install this in the center console , where it is completely discrete.  I was actually surprised at how well the touch screen works, even though it is very small, there seems to be no problem selecting items from menus.  Overall, I have been very happy so far, and I am going to try the navigation tomorrow.  Will update the group once I have done this.

The wiring connections on the back are meant to mimic the previous generation radios, so I think there is a chance that the unit will plug in without any wiring changes if you have an amplified 10 speaker system.

Best Regards

I've started doing a little research since this thread was posted as I too have the 10 speaker option. I have seen mention online that there is an adapter that is sold separately for that option.

My car came originally with CD-2 radio (option 691) with option

490 Hi-Fi sound with 10 speakers and Amps

.  Is that what yours came with?

Weird. On porsche's website it says that the navi is 'only available in Europe'.

I wonder if that thing can receive digital radio? They want to shut down FM radio over here in a few years.

N_CA,

Do you happen to have the part # for the Classic Navigation Radio?

EDIT:  I found the part number on this link form Porsche USA.  Part # 91164529100.  Also mentions the part number for the adapter required on "some" cars with amplifiers.

For people that want more detailed information, all the user manuals are available on the webpage shown above, you just have to scroll all the way to the bottom of the page to find them in PDF form.  The Installation manual says that this radio will connect directly to systems that use Nokia amps, and it also shows a wiring accessory harness for connection to Blaupunkt

I did try out the navigation feature yesterday, and apart from the fact that the chosen voice was an English gentleman telling me to "leave the motorway after 250 meters", the navigation seems to work well.  I have not yet gone back  to the menus to see the setting I need to make to improve the experience.

I like the simple look of that unit. Most everything aftermarket has soo many buttons and clutter. Kind of pricey though.

I called my dealer, best he could do is $1200, and $26.21 for the adapter cable for the aux amps. He said this ebay price is lower than his reorder price.  got to go sweet talk my banker.....

I've been watching that Ebay listing since this thread first started.  I have almost pulled the trigger a few times on it.  The only thing holding me back is concern that for some reason it may be the Euro version and not the N. American version.

As I mentioned in the original posting, I now am thinking of speaker upgrades, starting in the rear, as they sound bad now.  Can someone clue me in to how to access the rear speakers in a Six Speaker system?   I am assuming that the grill pops off somehow, but I am scared to try and force it and break something??
