OEM Radio

Can anyone describe or identify the OEM radio that was in my car? I have an early 92 with six speaker stereo. The window sticker lists stereo with CD Player. Not sure if this means CD player was in boot (there is no evidence of that). Or did the head unit have a CD Player?


I'm trying to put my car back to original specification.

So I have the original radio that came in my 93 in a box, also a CD player, 6 speaker system. Single disc, in the head. Radio face says "Porsche CD-2". Window sticker describes it as "Radio with CD Player/Amplifier". $1,315, no part number shown.

The original factory stereo had been replaced... don't know if this bracket for a changer was original, or if the car has had multiple stereo changes

The original stereo was a CR-1. If you had the CD player, it was a 6 disk changer in the trunk, not part of the head unit.

Jay, ae you saying the CD2 that was in my 93 wasn't original? Or did that apply only to 92s? I have the original window sticker and it doesn't list the radio by model, only the verbal above.

don't know, but I wouldn't be surprised if Porsche offered more than one stereo option, used across all models.

 

my '88 928 has a CD-1 ( predecessor to CD-2?) no CD changer that I know of.

So I've done a little more digging. My car was manufactured 10/91. Option codes are C02, 220, 437, 454, 490, 494, 650, & 691.


Window sticker says "Radio with CD Player." There is no evidence that I can find of a CD magazine in the rear hatch area.


It has 8 speakers. 2 under arm rest. 1 top front of door. 1 side of back seat.


Is it possible my original radio was CD-1 rather than CR-1?

Sculler - my car was also made in 10/91. It came with an Alpine-branded CD changer in the back cubby - six discs. I always thought the changer was after-market, but didn't really do any forensics on that.

Very interesting, thank you. I suspect my car came with CD-2 as described in the link you provided. At least confirms that CD-2 was installed in early 968's. My window sticker shows the same upgrade at $1,325 as in the link.


Now to see if I can find one!

Wow. CD-2. Very interesting! Mine was definitely CR-1. My VIN ends in 108. Build date 10/1/91.

Probably the difference in standard vs optional radio? The CD-2 in my '93 was a $1315 option. It had already been replaced with a better unit when I bought the car.

It never ceases to amaze me the prices auto makers , not just Porsche , charge for the OEM music systems when almost invariably one can buy any given sound system ( from a large variety..) of far superior aftermarket stereo head units, speakers, at half or a quarter of the price the auto makers' add to the car's sticker. However, having said that there is one puzzling advantage to the OE head units in 944s and 968s vs. anything else I have installed in the cars after removing the OE piece ; the reception ( FM stations ) has never been quite the same, and was always much stronger with the OE unit. I know what you're thinking..the antenna lead connection at the back of the head unit must have been either missed or improperly connected, yada yada. Not the case, I had all that carefully inspected more than once and verified all of the connections were correct . So I don't know if the OE units Porsche uses have a built-in antenna signal booster, whereas none of the after market units have that, or if there is some other explanation for this phenomenon , but that has been my observation .

I hear you..but sometimes there is no choice ; I don't know anything about the targa and other Porsches but in many new ( or at least in the high end makers ) you can't order it without the stereo system. and even more importantly perhaps , trying to replace that system with an aftermarket one at some point in the future is an exercise in futility ; all of the electronics are integrated in such a way that trying to change the OE sound system makes it a cost-prohibitive effort.

Confirmed with Jeff that option 691 on my car is "in dash CD player." So CD-2 was the original equipment stereo for my car. We all get our kicks in different ways. I love the feel of a vintage car (we might not be there yet but getting close). When I look at the current Alpine stereo installed in the slot where the CD-2 should be it detracts from the feel. I really don't care much what it sounds like.

I just bought my 968 about 5 months ago.  Just now getting it on the road after clutch, belts, cracked firewall, etc.  It has an Alpine which is a great unit but looks totally out of place, I like the original look also.  I will either go with something like a CD-2,  Becker CDR-220 or Harmon Kardon Traffic Pro.  I had the Traffic Pro in my 87 Turbo along with a nice Memphis 4 channel amp and it sounded and looked great.

Yup. My second choice if not original would be the CDR 220. I wonder if you can hook up to the original harness, amps with a 220 or if most people bypass the amps?
