I don't think the seat bottoms are that heavy though. Haven't taken them out yet, just the backs and rear seat belts.

They're glued onto the carpet, right?

as i remember, yes. i've only removed one set, and that was years ago. and no, they were not heavy. the type that goes over the entire rear is a bit heavier.

Flash,

I already have a gutted 924S (with yellow mirrors!) now I just need the engine to go pop and I can try and persuade my dad to go 50/50 on a 968 engine! I really like the idea and its probably the most logical and simplest way to get the car I want to build with the least amount of work. The only problem is i am quite a sucker for a pretty car and thats why I love the 968. I don't want to offend anyone who is a fan but the 924 is rather an ugly duckling in my opinion. Would it be possible like cloud said to basically throw on a 968 front and rear? I realize we are getting into the 'blasphemy' zone of Porsche ownership but I just have to ask. Also thank you guys for giving me all this info on these mods. It was really a kick of reality that will help my decision making massively and keep me from potentially being very disappointed after a lot of work. The one thing you said about trying to strip yours down and then regretting it sticks with me. I love to draw very detailed pen and inks and there is almost always a point where I add too much detail and regret it. I really don't want to do that with weight reduction and ruin a great car. 1000 thank you's to everyone that chimed in!

Best, MWG

Wow, that's great! I might do that today!! It would be the easiest 50 lbs total ever [this plus the battery that went in] and I'd be at 2850 with all stock body work, glass, headlights, engine accessories, etc etc.

i've seen some nice 924 body kits. also, mating 968 stuff to it would not be blasphemy in my mind. i've long considered drmatically changing the body line of my blue car to get rid of all of the hard lines, and round them out. lol - of course then it would look like a jag.

a 924 with 968 running gear would probably come in at about 2450lbs. sound like fun?

trevor - have you actually weighed the car yet? i was stunned to see what the real world weights were, versus the published weights

Yea, the riv blue car was corner balanced at 3028 + 180 lbs driver after the manual trans conversion with 1/8 tank of fuel. It was totally stock and pretty much zero-options 968 at that point [except 8 way power driver's seat] so I've been subtracting all of the parts deltas that I weigh myself using bathroom scale. I'll be changing suspensions during the winter and will post a real weigh-in during re-alignment. This 968 is a completely different animal than my stock m030 that probably weighs 3100 lbs.

actually, most of the cars come in at about 3150, with cabs generally being about 3300.

when you go to corner balance next time, do it with 1/2 tank, and of course your body weight in the driver seat, unless you plan to compete with only 1/8 tank. surprisingly it makes quite a bit of difference.

have fun on your quest. i know that one all too well. it can be very frustrating. i'm glad i removed some, as i've added back almost 150lbs of bracing, sound deadening, and stereo and such, but there definitely was a point where i knew i was going to hate the car if i went any farther. maybe i'm just too old

I finished Porsche Parade AX with the fuel light on so I think corner balance with 1/8 tank is the ticket for my circumstances. I can feel the perfect balance in the way the car drives, too. I was slightly incorrect on the weight and edited my post above. It was 3208 lbs with 180 lb driver so 3028 with spare and tools which I mistakenly left in. The corner balance was awesome at pretty much exactly 800 lbs per corner.

Yes, you're getting too old, haha.

I couldn't resist, my seat backs have been removed but my scale only showed 10 lbs each for 20 total, not 23, so I think my 968's weight should be around 2840 now [2862 with sunroof installed].

This reminds me of all the work that went into my 914 track car, how to make it lighter, faster, quicker in corners, etc. Lightened flywheel, MSD ignition and webbers, dollars added, weight deleted, dollars added, speedline wheels, dollars added, stiffer rollcage (oops more weight and dollars), dollars added, 911 front end, dollars added,,,, and I couldn't drive it on the street for very long before I was beat up. Best investment before races was to drop 10 lbs by skipping a few beers and dessert - a whole lot cheaper than fiberglass fenders and probably better for me in the long run. That seems to be the situation with any street car trying to become a race car. The UK version Sport was real nice mix between the CS and the standard 968. from what I've read, it was mostly from the 20mm lowering thru suspendtion changes, and removing a few bits, (really stuff added back on from the CS that wasn't a comforatable street car). I'd like to find the easiest in dollars to move closer to a Sport and still not delete vacation money from my wife's pocketbook.

Yup, weight of the blue 968 and no, it's not a clubsport...we didn't get CS cars in the US.

Ok, I'm ready to convert my sunroof to manual. Now that I'm removing the sunroof for autocross I've stripped a sunroof gear in BOTH my riv blue and black m030 968's in the last 2 weeks. That sucks! How much does the electric sunroof cable and motors weigh?

Converting the sunroof to manual operation is very easy - you just have to buy a set of early 944 rear latches, and bolt them in. There's at least one description on the web of how to do it. I tore out every component of my electric sunroof (to make sure the wretched thing wouldn't grow back ), but I haven't been as diligent as you about weighing everything I took out, unfortunately. It was probably about 5 lb or so. I also removed the liner form my sunroof on the advice of the guy who built my chassis brace/harness bar/roll bar, to make sure I have as much clearance as possible between the roll bar and the sunroof. That saved maybe another pound.
