Clubsport Enigma?
#1

I found this car not far from where I live and needed some other opinions. Sorry I did not know where to post this but as its a clubsport i imagined Fat Farm was as good as any.

http://www.autoscout24.ch/de/d/porsche-9...&vehtyp=10

Its at a porsche dealer and I am 99% sure its a proper clubsport.

The things that make me have doubts are as follows...

1. The car is Polar Silver. All the information I have seen points to the fact that 968's came in white, red, black, maritime blue, speed yellow, and riviera blue. I may have missed one but no where did I find info pointing to polar silver as a possibility. Could this have been paint to sample?

2. The car has a steering wheel with an airbag. ( i know it does not in the photos but It does in person the shop must have installed this steering wheel it may be nothing but it just raised a warning flag in my head.

3. The car has electric windows. I know this was an option but in conjunction with the other things it adds more doubt.

4. The car has aftermarket silver backed recaro seats. As far as i know the original clubsport seats had no huge recaro lettering on the headrests like the seats in this car do. It could be that this cars seats were worn out so they bought replacements but it only covered 150,000 kilometers and that does not seem to be enough to need two new seats.

Things that are right.

1. It has the CS badge even if that carries very little weight.

2. Looks to sit lower than my old 968 but then again that could be done aftermarket as well or could just be M030 option

3. No sunroof. (also believe this was an option on a regular 968

4. No rear seats. (not hard to fake)

5. No engine shroud.

6. No armrest cubby just a little indent.

Could anyone with a clubsport shed some light on this for me? The car is very clean otherwise and a clubsport is really one of my dream cars. I am really considering this car but cant shake these suspicions

Thanks for your time gents!

I'd hold out for a more original CS. Not having the original steering wheel and seats would affect the marketability and resale value in a big way IMO. Also, I'm more suspicious of the dual airbag dash than anything else, otherwise it looks legit...

Can't you tell from the VIN if it's a CS or a clone? I would assume that would be quite possible since there is so much that is coded on the VIN.

I am having a friend run the vin. I just still wanted some enthusiast's opinions. It also has 944 s2 door cards i believe. Were those not part of the club sport spec? Also anyone have any strange colored clubsport examples? G96, i think the original steering wheel is available as well. Apparently the owner bought it as a track toy for his daughter and its a possibility he opted for putting an airbag in for her to drive on the street. As far as the seats are concerned I was thinking that perhaps the Original buyer ordered it with regular seats instead of buckets. Do you think this is a possibility and if so I would imagine potential buyers would prefer the pole positions. What are your thoughts? Thanks for chiming in as I think your one of the only CS owners I've seen on these forums.

Best, Max

This is a genuine CS although it is not the most deseriable version. It came from the factory with comfort seats, airbags and power windows but without limited slip diff and sports suspension.

Regarding your observations:

1. This only applies to the first model year (1993). This car is a '95.

2. As pointed out before this car was factory fitted with airbags as an option

3. As above

4. The car didn't have bucket seats originally but the optional comfort seats

Hope this helps.

As for CS owners, there are quite some here on the forums. I have two examples myself :-)

Im just curious as far as the sport suspension is concerned. I thought all Clubsports came standard with a 20mm drop and beefed up suspension. Is this not the case? Is M030 suspension an even further improved suspension package or is it just the standard clubsport suspension?

The difference between 968 and 968 CS suspension is 20 mm shorter springs in front and a lower setup of the torsion bars in the rear.

The M030 package consists of Koni adjustable front struts (height + stiffness) and koni dempers including a helper spring in the rear. In addition it features thicker anti-roll bars, perforated brake discs and larger front brake calipers. This package was available on both standard and CS cars. The only difference is that the CS M030 cars came with limited slip diff as standard.

So in short: yes the M030 suspension is an even further improved suspension package.

Some other info regarding your previous questions:

Please note that only cars in the CS colors (see below) have their bucket seats color matched. Club Sports in other colors came with black backed bucket seats. In other words when this particular car would have been equipped with bucket seats from the factory they would have been black.

- red

- white

- black

- speed yellow

- maritime blue ('93)

- riviera blue ('94 and '95).

The VIN shows it as a CS but i'm less than convinced, if it wasn't a left hooker i'd lay money it was a sport (which come up as a CS on a VIN check).

They did't come in silver AFAIK

This car has had rear seats in the past (you can see the catches)

Front bumper is a bad colour match (nothing to do with CS or not!)

Seats are aftermarket Recaro Pole Positions (but could have bee changed) as are mounts (I have these in mine)

Does it have a remote electric boot release? Or a handle in the back?

In my view this is more like a Sport than CS, although believe they were only a UK car.

A Sport doesn't really exist really. It is nothing more than a UK dealer special. That is why Porsche themselves list the as a CS. This car differs from the Sport not having a sunroof, electrical boot release and no rear seats (M419).

Correct, a Sport was built on the line as a CS and then some extras added back in.

To note though, you could spec a Sport (or any 968) to have no sunroof, the picture shows the rear seat stays so I reckon it had rear seats (which was an option anyway on the CS), additionally you can see where the belts were bolted in (CS's had blanking plates).

Where is the manual boot release handle as I couldn't see it. Electric Windows.........

And I still believe you couldn't get a CS in silver (In the UK anyway)

But the Vin does show it as a CS but to me....... still to be convinced..... assume the VIN sticker has been checked that numbers match the rest of the car?

Yes, a fixed list of extras (bundle) specifically for the UK but each of these were separately available to all other CS markets on client request.

No, since it was a fixed list there was NO possibility to exclude options, in that case the client would have to order a CS and only add the options he wanted. There is no Sport ever produced without a sunroof. Additional options on the Sport are also very rare. There's only two produced with A/C and only one with M030.

I do agree with you about the rear seat hinges. It looks like this car has been converted later as it now features a boot lock as well. It didn't come with these options from the factory though.

Regarding the color, as pointed out before the color restriction didn't apply after the '93 model year. In fact, I have a '94 silver 968 Club Sport myself.

Any 968 Coupe came without a sunroof as standard. For some specifications it was added as a standard feature (UK & US for example) but for all other countries it was an extra.
