Greetings - New 968 Owner here
#1

Hello all,

My name is Ed and I have just purchased my 1994 968. The car is a silver Cabriolet with a red top and interior. 6 speed manual transmission and 44001 miles.

I purchased the vehicle for $5000.00, which sounds great (and it is, except I purchased the vehicle from the widow of a friend who passed two years ago), but the vehicle has been sitting for almost 5 years. The vehicle is currently on my flatbed trailer and is awaiting a trip to the local import mechanic for a head to toe fluid change ( hydro fluid, brake fluid, coolant,) as well as timing belt, tires, battery, vario-timing check, clutch check and anything else it might need.

I am thinking the best case scenario is about 2 to 3,000 for this workup.

The body is perfect with no marks on it, and the interior is mint as well. The only problem with the interior is that it had a broken cassette door hinge on the arm rest but I have one on it's way from Pelican Parts, as well as an owners manual.

I have been researching this car for some time and am very proud to own this vehicle. I have one other vehicle in progress and that is a 1983 Volvo 240 flatnose, one of the 500 Class A - documented cars on the registry. My 968 now gives me two vehicles that have sub 800 production/import stats.

I am a retired photographer and live in Mims, Florida ( Where is that? Think NASA and the Vehicle Assembly Building and I am right across the river - more or less) I have a website at www.edkindle.com and have several hobbies including collecting Nikon equipment and antiques. I also run a non profit foundation that is restoring a vintage Fairchild C123 Provider aircraft that was built in 1954.

I guess that is about it for an intro. I am looking forward to reading the forums and to continue to learn about my new supercar.

I am excited to get this vehicle on the road and to finally learn what it is like to own and drive a Porsche.

Thanks,

Ed

Sounds like an awesome find! 8K for a car in that shape and only 44K miles is rare. Hope it doesn't bring the market prices down

We've spent untold millions on superchargers and engines to bring the price up a few grand

Great intro. Sounds like a good deal for you and your friends widow. If she is a car person she found a good home. Enjoy your ride. Listen to Dave and mod up.

Thanks for the comments. I have to say, the car is impressive, but so is the steepness of the learning curve. I have been very surprised at the amount of education it has taken to get just as far as I am, and I am barely into it! I am surprised that just anyone with bucks can walk into a dealership and buy one of these cars and drive off. It seems like there should be extended classes on the vehicles and manditory tests!

The more I read and learn about the car, the more I realize there is to learn! I am sure the car will live up to my expectations, and even if it doesn't, everyone I have told about the car is jealous, so that alone might be worth the price of admission - lol.

At least the wife is into it as she likes the wind in her hair and she won't ride on the back of the Harley anymore since we live in the land of under and uninsured motorists! She is just waiting for our first drive.

I have a few photos, but they are of the car still on the trailer. As soon as I get it running, I will do a full set of photos. Looking forward to being a part of this club. I sent in my PCA membership and next job is to get on the registry.

Talk to eveyone later!

Welcome! It is great to hear that you have support from your wife on this new adventure.

My 968 started it's North American journey down in Florida (then to California, to Washington state, and finally to British Columbia, Canada).

Edit = I see this is post #1000!

I think my car started in CA then Ohio then Florida. I think I am only the 2nd owner. IT is really a clean car and I can't wait to be in it down the road. Every time I look outside and see it on the trailer under the cover I get so impatient to drive it. It goes in on the 2nd to the shop.

I am sure there will be some bugs to work out and I still have to get the garage ready to put it in. I am afraid once I finally drive it, I won't want to drive anything else!

Looks great! So luxurious! Did you pick up the car and start driving already?

Nope - I picked it up last week and dropped it off the trailer Thursday to my import guy. This is basically as I bought it. All I have done was clean the seats as the leather had some mold from sitting, then Lexoled them. The center console arm rest hinge is broken, but I have another waiting to go in.

I have not even had a chance to wash it. The car will be in the shop a week or two depending on what it is going to take to get it running since it has been sitting for about 5 years.

I am hoping to get the garage cleaned out while it is in the shop so it can come home. That is after a wonderful first drive!

red interior! I had a white 94 cab with black top, red tonneau and red interior. It was also a tip. I had 18" wheels that were powdered coated to exactly match the dark red of the interior. Bought it sight unseen except for great Florida palm tree photos. Had it shipped to Santa Fe as my NM car. When it arrived my wifesaid it was the most beautiful car she had ever seen. It was awesome. Sold it to a guy in the Seattle area.

NIce - I was not really keen on it at first, but I figured, Hey a $5000 Porsche! But it is really growing on me.

I would not have been so polite . I was offered $ 25 k a couple of years ago ( and without any contingencies, like a PPI, etc..) by some old (er) gentleman who owned a blue 911 and a blue 928 .. wanted a blue 968 to add to his " collection" and I politely declined then. I might have taken $ 50k, but since then my car's value ,TO ME , has gone up, as 968s in great shape become more and more difficult to find. So, this car is simply not for sale. I know you guys probably think I'm a lunatic, but even at $ 50K I would likely have to do some serious soul-searching to consider selling it.. For $ 100k though.. I'll hand over the keys.

My wife keeps on telling me: "You 968 guys are all a little crazy". I guess she is right about some of us!

I got to see under the car today for the first time - clean, clean, clean! I am getting really excited to get this thing moving faster than I can push it!

Everything under the car looked great except someone backed into something and tweaked the exhaust a bit, but all that should need is loosened and re-aligned.

Belts are first, then a little lube into the cylinders for a half day, then a bit of turning by hand....there was almost no gas in it, so I am taking that as a good omen....less fuel to me equals less varnish and gunk. Flushing all fluids and lines, then new fluids and then, maybe a start attempt. Then new plugs and tune up....I am getting so stoked!

I also forgot to mention, I found the original paperwork in the car today - No window sticker, but all the service records - My new inport guy Pete and I poured over them. Not much done at all but what was done seemed right and on time.

I also found the guy before me paid 31K for the car less than 10 years ago from a specialty import dealer. Wowsers!
