Hi everyone,

 

Saying hi from Toronto. Will likely be taking possession of my first Porsche in the next month or so - test driving it (hopefully) tomorrow. 1992 968, sub-100k kilometres (or ~62,000 miles for the folks down south).

 

Looking to learn as much as I can about these wonderful pieces of machinery and looking forward to meeting everyone on the forums.

Is it a six speed or a tiptronic ? If it’s a six speed, when you test drive it, turn the radio and ventilation blower off and listen carefully to all the sounds . If you hear a jet engine like whine coming from the back of the car, particularly on deceleration, either keep looking for another car, or, be prepared for a $ 3,000 bill to fix the pinion bearing .

Welcome, there is a thread on the site with tips for new owners. That would also give you some items to check out. PPI is most important from a qualified shop. Ask to see all the service records, esp date of last timing belt change. That puppy breaks and the pinion bearing will be like pocket change.


On a manual transmission, the clutch should feel like butter.

Welcome!!!....you have also reached the magic number for timing belt replacement. It should have been done by now (ask for proof) Factory says 60000 miles (100,000 km) we say 45000 miles (72000km). That service should include balance belt, all rollers and water pump. Water pump is not part of the regular schedule but is highly recommended considering everything is off in the front. (Money saver later)....Hope your deal turns out well. Let us know.

Hey everyone,

 

Appreciate the insights. I drove the car on Saturday and it felt amazing. The driving was smooth, clutch was "like butter", seamless shifting, ran very well by what I could tell.

 

Timing belt was replaced less than five years ago, A/C repaired a couple years ago (both by Porsche), and no noise coming from the back. I have full service records and a number of the concerns look to be taken care of.

 

That said, I'll go back before purchase to check some additional things based on the information you all have provided here. The owner is a friend of the family and the opportunity came from me reaching out at the right time so I'm very comfortable on that front.

 

Assuming everything continues to go well, I'll get some photos uploaded when/if I take possession!
