Gluing Mirror Back on
#1

What fun, I was wrassling my dashboard back in place, my head bumped the mirror, and it popped off.

Any tips/suggestions on how to put it back on? I've glued back mirrors on other cars in the past and know about the special glue you use. I guess I'll just a sticker remover to clean the residue off the glass, and clean up the mirror post gluing surface the same way.

Tom. I had terrible luck regluing a mirror on another vehicle with the cheap kits such as found at Walmart. No matter how carefully I prepared the glass and followed directions, it kept falling off. I finally had it done by a glass company who did not charge me.

Tom,

I got a single application window mirror adhesive at PEP BOYS. It worked just fine.

I also used a cheap application kit from the local auto parts store. It was 2 chemicals that mixed together when you crush the common ampule that they were in IIRC. The hard part was holding the mirror in place without moving it for about 5 minutes while the glue dried. The mirror has been holding fine for over a year now.

Here is a recent article that might help from Popular Mechanics.

From reading the Popular Mechanics article I suspect that the WalMart kits I purchased were out of date.

I did the same, and just ended up buying a new mirror from Western Auto. it's light and less bulky, but not a OEM mirror by any means... you have to razor the old glue off...

The button went back on easily with the two-tubes stuff from Pep Boys. On the subject of rearview mirrors, have done some research on compatible aftermarket/upgrade options, and of course, none of them use the 968 mounting method. So, no apparently any upgrade would require replacing the glued-on button, using some sort of adapter, etc.

The other thing I've found is that most aftermarket mirrors are 10.25" wide, whereas our OEM mirror is about an inch narrower. Does that make a difference? Seems it might interfere with the sunvisors in some situations. And a slight reduction in forward visibility.

Has anyone seen how they mount the rearview on newer models? There was an EBay auction recently for a 996 mirror with autodimming. If it shared the round button mounting, this might be an option. It's likely also smaller than the 10.25 aftermarket units.
