Getting hard to start when engine is cold
#1

Over the past couple of weeks the car is getting harder to start when cold. Odd because it is getting warmer outside. Just doesn't seem to want to catch on. Sometimes needs 6-8 tries. I did swap the DME relay from my cab today and it made no difference - cab started perfectly with coupe relay and coupe still had a tough time with the cab relay. Once it starts it runs perfectly, averaging about 34.5 mpg. Tried a search but this might be a general topic and I couldn't figure out what to actually search for. I am hoping that the voltage regulator replacement thing did not mess up a connection somewhere.

Also, if Pete is reading this, or if anyone else can do it, can I get a picture of the oil pressure sensor? I want to remove it and clean the connections. It still bounces a lot.

FYI - Sunset quoted $2500 for the wiring harness to the fuse block and instrument cluster. Ouch!

There are a few things that may cause a hard start. Here are few:

- Low fuel pressure [may be regulator or pump - check with fuel press gauge]

- Weak ignition coil [test by swap for a known good if possible]

- Vacuum leak [check vac lines for cracks or disconnection]

HTH..

I agree 100% with S Cal968. Check vac lines really closely. I say this because just recently(since I reverted back to the original OEM chip) car seemed to take longer to start. And today, for the first time , it did not start on the first try. I looked over everything very carefully in the engine bay. Then I decided to change spark plugs. I put a new set of Bosch Platinums 4016's in (and found a small oil leak from spark well gasket on #4).

Anyway, car seemed to run better, but it did not feel like all 250hp's( i say 250 because of ported intake box and aftermarket exhaust) were there by any stretch. Just by chance, I removed the rear plastic engine bay cover to snug up the valve cover bolts when I saw a dangling vac line. What the???...Next to the battery under the rear engine bay plastic cover, there is a vac valve. Well, i hooked this back up and added a zip tie to keep it in place.

All i have to say is WOW!! starts right up and runs like 30hp was just added to the engine. Originally, I thought that power was felt when the vario came on. NOW i have power through the ENTIRE rpm range. I can easily get the rear wheels to spin on a hard turn. I have a feeling this line was unhooked for a long time because of the grime on the valve nipple.

But not all can be good news. ended up hitting a big Michigan pothole and a tiny windshield chip right in front of my face decided to spread a foot to the right....eeeeesshhhh! Anyone have a spare windshield(no chips)?
