Fun fact, some of the utilities have very quietly changed the times they consider "peak" where the rates are higher. This didn't require as much approval so they did it and are now making more than they did previously without officially raising the rates. So pay attention if you charge your electric car, there are now fewer hours and higher peak rates.

In the uk in 2009 oil per barrel was £106, fuel 1.19 litre, today oil is £96 a barrel and fuel 1.92 litre



Who is making a massive profit, governments with tax and duty



They have all got to pay the pandemic bill some how, and its public tax payer thats paying back the debt, now I dont have too much of an issue with that in principle, but does it have to repaid at such a huge rate. Slow it down a bit before the world drops back into recession

Regular at my nearby Valero this morning is down to $3.95.  This must be one of the steepest price declines ever, outside of the pandemic.  Obviously Biden's policies deserve 100% of the credit for this lifesaving price drop, right?  I mean, people were ready to burn him at the stake when prices were climbing, so he should deserve the credit for the drop, shouldn't he?  

 

I'm joking, of course, but it never ceases to amaze me how people are so quick to find scapegoats in response to bad news, but are very slow to dish out praise when things are going well (or at least better).  Just shows the negativity bias so pervasive in human nature.  We really are our worst enemies sometimes.

Our gas prices ( at least on the Peninsula part of the Bay Area ) are still hovering around $ 6.50  for 91 octane .   So a bit of a drop over the last couple of weeks, but no major change ..yet .

Our local cheapo chain, “Go Gas”, (formerly “Mash Gas”) is down $0.30 in the last week to $5.69/g for regular in Oakland and Orinda.

Our prices here lagged behind the national average on the way up, and are doing the same on the way down. $5.47 for 91 Octane eFree for the 968 the other day. $5.07 for 88 eFree for the smart yesterday. Regular is about $4.80.



Local news said its the sharpest drop on record, but the fact-adverse Fox crowd will never acknowledge that. The narrative is now prices are dropping so fast its hurting mom and pop gas stations.

Why the Bay Area, where much of the nation’s gas is produced, has the highest prices is beyond me!   The cheapo gas is now down to $5.29 for regular.  (The Hybrid Highlander visits the gas station far more frequently than the 968 these days).

Since it's an undisputed fact the the sitting president is 100% responsible for the price of gas, the recent incredible price drop leads to a few inescapable conclusions.  We need to start looking beyond the obvious fact that this achievement clearly makes Joe Biden far and away the greatest president in US history, and start opening the discussion as to whether he's even mortal.  Yes, we need to seriously start considering whether he's actually a Superhero  .

The local Valero is down to $3.09 for regular (although there's a huge, ahem, premium in Texas for the 93 octane all our cars use - it's over a dollar more than regular).  Between the end of the summer driving season, and the fact that the demand for electric cars is reportedly finally picking up, it wouldn't surprise me to see a very long downward slide in gas prices, maybe below $2/gallon in the cheaper parts of the country, over the next few years.

Gas ( for premium / 91 octane ) is already over $ 8 / gal. at a few stations in Beverly Hills.

The variation in gas prices across the country is amazing.  We recently paid $2.89 in north Texas on our way to vacation in Colorado.  This latest move by OPEC will push prices up for sure, though.

Florida just gave a discount for October of removing the 25 cent tax per gallon as a tax holiday. Then OPEC dropped production and prices went up around 30 cents...so much for a break.

I put 8 gal in the car Sunday and it was $40 bucks.

I'm not sure how it works (anyone from the petroleum industry out there?), but my take is that OPEC sets its production targets (which don't appear to be universally adhered to by its members) based on what is best for OPEC, based on prevailing economic conditions.  At the moment, there is worldwide concern over a weakening global economy, which tends to put downward pressure on oil prices, so OEPC's latest round of reduced production targets appear to be aimed at shoring up the price of oil to counteract the impact of a weakening economy.

 

This is also the reason domestic oil producers aren't pumping more oil (it has nothing to do with Biden's "radical green agenda").  Turning on idled production capacity following the Covid-induced downturn is very expensive, and there is fear that with a weakening economy, oil prices won't remain high enough to justify the expense, not to mention that pumping more oil will further exacerbate the situation by putting more downward pressure on prices as a result of the increased supply.

 

The sooner we get off fossil fuels, the better.  But of course, there's already talk of lithium becoming the "new petroleum", and world lithium supplies are unfortunately in some pretty unsavory countries, so we may end up with a "LiPEC" cartel controlling the price of lithium, leaving us no better off than we are today.  But at least the electricity needed to fuel EV's is produced domestically.
