Glass Sunroof
#1

There is a listing on ebay for what the seller calls a "Saratoga Sun Roof". His description makes it sound like it was a factory option. Anyone know about that?

If I remember right, this was an option on a very few cars, there was also a company that made them aftermarket but they have stop making them.

Definantly a factory option, but I don't think it was made through the factory. I.E. like independent dealer installed. Some people want that one bad...I have been following several, and thats the highest one I have seen so far by a good margin. Looks very clean. Would be a neat modification if you didn't have a blazing sun.

If the condition of it is as good as the seller describes, it'll go higher.

Personally, I like it for the reduced weight and increased head clearance, but it does add wind noise and increases cabin heat: not good for where I am (Socal)....

I had one (bought used for $500)years ago cause I always wanted one. It was perfect later model grey unit that I felt would have looked great on my midnight blue coupe. The first time I went to install it and even though I was very careful it blew out my gears (crappy plastic bastards!) the motor and the cable from the motor to the gears all in one fell swoop! The repairs cost in excess of $1000 because I have zero patience for doing something like this myself. The parts were as usual very pricey. The lifting arms did not line up correctly which caused the whole mess. I ended up dumping the thing to some guy in Vegas for $400 and was glad to see it gone. I never heard if he had any luck when he installed it. It was an awful experience.

I had one back in 2001 for about six months. I liked it a lot, but no matter how I fiddled and lubricated, I could never stop it from squeaking. Finally, sold it on EBay for about $50 more than I spent, so had a nice free try out.

The Saratoga Top was not a factory option but after market. The company that produced them made 3 versions, over a 4 year period, for the 924 and 944 and they originally sold for $650. The one shown appears to be version 3 which was the best of the bunch. I had tried to get the line restarted but they wanted me to commit to 10,000 units at $650. Biggest problem for them was paying Porsche for the licensing again and, of course, the volume they wanted.

I purchased my version 3 at the Hershey Swap Meet a few years ago for $500, with original box and black case. Looks like they have appreciated quite a bit.
