made and installed a new upper grill sunday. doesn't use bent 'tabs' to hold it in, so it can be removed more than once if necessary. i have enough mesh to make 2 more....

I like the looks of the replacement mat'l. Where did you source the material? My lower grill has a few holes in it and it will be on my list sometime.

Hi, Thought I'd bring this forward since Flash is not going to have the Grill made to sell anymore.

unfortunately, you can't actually get a grill out of a 48" wide piece. you need 49". this is exactly the problem.

What about a 1/2' trim piece on each side to get the 49" width? It might have to be welded for strength for mounting?

can't really weld to the mesh. very thin stuff.

it's made in larger sheets. just unwieldy, which is why it gets damaged.

Looks like it's also a 47" usable piece (per their web site). But in measuring my lower grill opening it looks like it's only 46" wide so a 47" should be wide enough. They'd have to ship in a 4" long box to avoid bending. I have my old grill stashed somewhere around here I need to look at.

Ok guys here is what I did. Found McNichols metal products web site (not affiliated). They will cut anything that you need. For my top and bottom grills I ordered their flattened expanded #304 stainless steel #16 - 1/2 piece large enough for both grills. This pattern allowed for 70% opening. They cut to my size and attached to a piece of plywood for shipping, wrapped in cardboard and it arrived perfectly flat. Hint - you have to be perfectly clear on how you want the dimensions to be oriented - which measurement for the long dimension of the diamond shaped opening and which for the height.

The upper grille(mouth) turned out very nice and I painted black w/clearcoat. Have not completed the lower yet but it will be the same color and pattern.

Hi Carl, Do you happen to remember the correct dimensions you ordered for the bottom and top grill? What type clips did you use to attach the grills?

Hey Larry:

The piece I ordered was 18" W buy 49" L with the long dimension of the diamond shape oriented with the Long dimension of the sheet. As I said earlier, you have to be specific with these guys on the orientation. It took them three tries to get it right with mine - at their expense. I have only done the upper grille at this point. No clips were used. Once I shaped the upper grille I rigged it to be removable and attached it with get ready for this, " electrical wire". Coated so it will not scratch. My '92 has all of the engine covers so all the attachment points are hidden but accessible for removing.

I suspect I will be excoriated here but when I had the first rework on the red 968 done I just asked the shop to replace the grill because it was beat. I don't remember the price but it didn't pop out at me on the bill. Those of you who know me know I'm not a DIY'er but I remember this as an easy and inexpensive fix. Looking at it last nite i saw that it is still is in good shape and looks good. This of course was after I pried some rubber off it that I missed!

the grill needs to be 49" wide. trust me on this. you need to deal with the reverse opening, and the mounting screw locations, and the curvature of the grill itself. it ends up not working from a 48" piece.

OEM grill is about $75 as i remember

i too would like to see how the upper one was attached, and what it looked like when it was done. the one i have is extremely fragile, and i don't think i can remove it a gain without it breaking. not real happy about how it attaches either.
