How many Forum members actively track their car? This can range from DE, NASA, SCCA, Cup and other types of associations.

I originally thought I might when I purchased the car, without thinking of all the requirements for convertibles (roll bar, etc.).  So, not me.

I have a coupe so not need a roll cage. But perhaps I should have one. The one and only track experience I had with the Oregon Porsche club was not an ideal day. Firstly the cars are inspected once a year.. By your local mechanic. He signs a piece of paper saying the car is OK. Well a car in January may or may not be the same car in the summer. of course I tried to explain this to the local board who did not want to hear it. Of course a 911 lost a radiator hose on the back straight of PIR (Portland International Raceway) and we lost 2 1/2 hours while the track cleaned up the mess. Then there is the fact that most drivers are 58 or older. Those people with slower reaction times, wearing glasses etc. should not be driving a car that does 200 mph.

So I do not drive at tracks anymore. I did drive many East coast tracks 35 years ago when I was a member of the Northern NJ club and about 30 years old. In this club every car 1 month before had to be inspected, driven by an instructor at the track to make sure the car was in good running order. A much better program and the cars at that time only went about 160 MPH. with the rigorous inspection thee never were incidents at the rack, but we always found things wrong with cars at our inspections.

William you sure lump 58+ year olds in an overly broad category. Ever notice an airline pilot with glasses? I wouldn't say my reflexes are as fast as they were when I was younger but I'm not a doddering old fool who slows up other drivers or is a danger to others or myself. There are plenty of older drivers who are very good drivers. By the way, I'm 58 soon to be 59. See you in the nursing home!

Did it once, and that was enough; can't stand to wear a helmet inside the car .

Well I could understand how you wouldn't want to miss your hair. But the possible shoe selection should have been intriguing to you!

Lol. Btw, I'm not quite at the point where I fear missing my hair, although I will eventually get there no doubt .. Yes, I know that was supposed to read mess, could not resist ..

I assume that driving a cab while wearing a helmet might be more tolerable than in a hard top, but I found the experience so uncomfortable it took away 90% of the experience's fun factor. A lesser reason I did not go back to tracking is that as most of you know I'm "against the grain" and find nothing thrilling in turning fast, but rather prefer the sensation of high speeds attained on straightaways and most tracks simply don't have sufficient room for that ; maybe Nurbergring ( and in a much faster car than a 968 ) or some circular NASCAR track - even with the 968, banking turns at 100 mph + , and straightaways at 150 mph + would motivate me to track the car...but still without a friggin' helmet .

Ok, let me beat you to the punch : no it's not that all helmets are to tight to fit my big fat head ( ego ) and that's why they bother me, lol.

Two years ago, yes, this year not so much...  retiring from the military and working for a regional airline for six months ate into the disposable income it takes to run track events.  Now that I am starting with United next month, I will be back doing some events on the East Coast.

My primary track weapon will be the 968 with the new head work, and occasional appearances with Tubbo.  Tubbo is a fat pig, but a fast one with the uprated springs, Moton shocks, flash, headers, light flywheel, and exhaust...  Costs don't really compare between the two as I can get 4 tires for the 968 for the price of two for Tubbo.  Gas, don't want to talk about it.  Fuel and air = horsepower.

Rap,

I track mine regularly, with NNJR (northern New Jersey Region PCA). As willamoss says, our events are focused, first and foremost, on safety. In fact, our motto is "Safe Serious Fun". Works pretty well. I've been driving on track for many years, instructing for more than 20 and chief Instructor for almost that long.

It's a great sport, as long as its done correctly--like most things in life

Going to be at Pocono this weekend? You're right about NNJR and safety. I appreciate emphasis on this because some regions aren't as focused and the cowboys often take advantage of this fact.

Rap,

I will be at Pocono on Friday; as you know, it is an advanced day plus Ladies Day: i.e. the only students are ladies. It's been a big hit for many years and encourages women drivers who get turned off by our "male sport."

I'd be there Saturday and Sunday but it's my grandson's birthday and some things take priority...

Bill3 sorry I missed you Friday. Nice track day except for the oil and kitty liter. Saturday a wash, Hoosiers don't work. Sunday, can you say concrete wall? After waiting for the second run and a good 75 minutes of dry time I decided to go out. While we are waiting to be released I guy walks up to me and says I notice you're running slicks, there is still standing water out there. Course I ask where and think ok that's doable. I get through the infield and prepare to enter the bowl and under steer coming out at a slow speed and just miss the wall. Phew. Now I'm on the back straight up to speed and entering pocono's long turn one counterclockwise. Let some cars pass and come back into the infield still ok. Now again I go to enter the bowl and same thing, under steer and this time I barely miss the wall. The thing about these concrete walls is that they are immobile. I think they have magnets on them too. So I realize that I'm having way too much fun. My superior intellect kicks in and politely suggests I come in. My base intellect tells me that load of crap in my pants will probably continue to be uncomfortable. So I come in and count my lucky stars. The video of it confirms the depth of my intelligence.

I'm all in.  My 94 coupe is making a transition from street to track.  Autopower roll bar, Bilstein escort cup with torsion bar delete, M030 bars front and rear, Kirkey seats left and right, auto power belts, Boxter twist 17X9 front and rear with Maxxis RC-1 tires, Hartman splitter and canards from RS Barn.  GT racing hood skin.  This is what has been done to date.  I have a Wavetrac diff on the bench waiting for install.  I'm looking for a rear wing.  Good Aero has an interesting wing that attaches to the rear bumperette mounts.  Brakes and hose will come when i feel they are limiting.  I will probably supercharge it in conjunction with an engine rebuild.  Squaring the wheels, shocks and bars along with a decent alignment took off four seconds a lap at Laguna and Sears Point (Sonoma Raceway).

So if you're looking for interior parts, power seats, door panels, air bags or any incidental parts such as sunroof trim and motor send me a message.  Car has a two tone light blue/dark blue interior.

If you have the type of Autopower bar I used to have, it bolts to the floor at the front of the main hoop.  Please do yourself a favor and put some reinforcement in the floor if it doesn't bolt to the sills.  The floor is simply sheet metal and in a hard roof impact the main hoop could go through the floor...

Sounds like a fun car!

Rap,

Sorry I missed you at Pocono; saw your nice looking red car and every time I headed that way, I got interrupted. I didn't have a student assigned and wasn't driving so figured I would have time after running the Car Control stuff in the AM. Instead, I was in the car on track at least 4 times. No complaints, for sure but a lot busier than I planned.

Next time!

I will be at Watkins Glen and Palmer with NNJR for my next events.

Going to summit 8/7 or NJMS 8/21? I had to cancel NNJR's WGI for a wedding reception for my son. Talk about bad timing!
