The Beginning of the End

Well the second event for 2015 is in the can and going south didn't make it much warmer. Next event is at Pocono in 3 weeks and it will be a miracle if the weather is nice.

First day at Summit was sort of cold, 40's, and I was in the first run group. I left the r1r's on because of the high probability of rain. It sleeted after the track went cold on the first day. Little slippery at first until tires and track warmed up. Obligatory groundhog killed first day. Not by me this year thank god! The car ran well but man I miss the torque from the sc. Car dynoed last Tuesday at 222 at wheels so it's no slouch but not the same. Lot of sliding and used some throttle steer in the carousel to turn the car. Totally cool. If you have the opportunity to run a slip pad do it. You will then understand!

Second day sunny and warmed up quickly enough to shed some of my nanook of the north clothes. This event ran black and white run groups together so it was interesting to run with a faster and better run group. New engine burns oil but other than that no complaint.

First day of a three day event at Pocono today. Weather was very nice. Most events you run 4-20 or 25 minute runs. Today we did 4-30 minute runs and finished with a 45 minute run. This was the most I have driven in one day and it gives me an increased respect for the drivers at LeMans, Daytona and Sebring. Those guys run several hours and I'm dragging after my day. Guess I'm just an old pussy.

Thunderstorms forecast the next two days so we shall see what the days bring.

Amazing how different a run of 20/25 minutes is from a 35/40 minute run, on both the car and driver.

I noticed the same thing. Gas consumption was up. In fact even with 3 jugs of gas I had to go get more. Concentration started to wane at the end of the last run so I came in 10 minutes early as did many others. This was two days of driving in one day. But I had a blast and the car drove well. Weather is iffy today and in the high 70's low 80's. Time for the cool shirt to come out!

Ever drive over the kitty liter they put down to dry up oil spills? Twice yesterday we had to negotiate on this stuff. Once in the bowl of course on the line and once in a corner again on the line. Unnerving! The corner one was a little slippery at first and then got better. First run I cam off after three laps when it started raining. Hoosiers don't work well in the rain and concrete walls off no solace.

Third day turned out a beauty. Having some problems with the lexan hatch. Screws are coming out and a weird waffling noise was coming out of the back. Somewhat annoying and distracting. It's simply amazing what Hoosiers do and for me the confidence they inspire. 5 days of driving in 3 days. Had a car spin out in front of me going into the bowl which was sort of neat. Of course now without the sc when I lose my momentum well that's a bummer. Onward Christian soldiers!

The waffling sound I was experiencing changed a bit after a great weekend at Watkins Glen with the Zone 1 event. 240 drivers from all over eastern North America. Fair number from Canada. I don't understand why these French Canadians don't speak English? One just can't understand them.

So the noise seemed to originate from the back drivers side tire. Jacking the car up showed some back and forth movement on the tire. After taking the tire off, the rotor had some play in it. CV joint seemed ok and the boots were intact with no cracks. Has anyone developed a heat shield for the left boot? End of weekend for me. Bummer cuz I missed out on a check ride up to the next level.

It was so cool smoking a variety of cars that were far faster than me but couldn't keep up in the turns. There were five 968's at this event and I have never seen so many 944's. There was also a 928 GTS that was supposed to have been the car in the original Cannonball run. Guy had a great story!

The Glen is being closed later this year for a repaving. Should be smoking hot next year!

I think DEing is a form of Mental Illness.

Seems it was just a bearing problem so I had both sides replaced. Imagine driving on the track on 22 year old bearings? I learn something new everyday. Would appear that for aggressive and numerous track events, yearly replacement might be considered. I wonder what I haven't replaced in this car. Oh yea rear hubs which are still ok. Can you say on winter project list.
