Rap,

After NNJR WG, I will be at NNJR Palmer (Aug 28-30) and NNJR VIR (end of Oct). Not sure about the fall before VIR yet.

Would love to do Summit; haven't been there in a while but August is already more than fully booked between family stuff and 2 DE's.

Congrats on the wedding: that's great!

Thank you. I have two in one month. Hadn't expected or planned for that but that's life! I'm fitting in thunderbolt on the tail end of a family vacation at the beach. I am actually taking my trailer and car with me. I think I must be somewhat unhinged!

Anyone going to Summit Point this weekend? Trailer and truck are packed for an early leave tomorrow for West Viginia. Hot and humid. Thank god for the cool shirt and a swimming pool at the hotel! Cars all doodied up and looking mighty sharp. Used a new product after a compound, Polish and wax routine. To think I do this for a track car. Ahh well!

Just got my track car wrapped.  I couldn't be happier with the artwork.  I'll be at Laguna Seca on July 30.

Nicely done! Very original idea. A 968 for a Mad Max movie :-)

Why didn't you do the whole car??? Looks kinda cool but I think I would have done it all... something missing in the transition.

Summit Point in July equals debilitating heat. Thank god for a cool shirt! Don't know how people run without them. 2.5 good days of fun and run. Couple of car fires which I've not seen before. Times down in the afternoon as the heat sapped your mental quickness. Makes me all the more impressed with professional drivers who maintain over time.

The one good thing about the heat were all the chicks walking around in skimpy revealing things. Does anyone else look for the visual angle?

Did you buy the wrap and did the job on your own or was it done by a shop ? If it's a local shop ( local as in somewhere on the peninsula b/w SSF and Santa Clara ) can you let me know which one ? Thanks

Shows him installing it himself... and it appears to be made specifically for the 968... most curious.

Guys,

Apologies for the radio silence.  There is somewhat of a story behind the decision to wrap the car.  It was freshly painted when I bought it.   However, the clear and the base were not compatible and the clear coat came off in sheets.  My joke to my wife was that the car was burning-up-on-reentry.  I was converting it to a track car at the time and had no intention of investing in paint.  The burning up theme stuck with me.  i was looking for some artwork that could simulate the appearance and heat distress of space shuttle tiles.  i found this artwork of polished aluminum aircraft skin and decided this would work just as well.  I worked with Justin at Palmer Signs in Roseville, CA on the scaling of the art and distressing the appearance of the skin and the peeling and scorching of the paint and the Porsche emblem on the GT Racing hood skin.  It was never intended to do the whole car.  The car is wrapped with a solid color Avery products blue from the A pillars back.  That color was matched in the printing of the hood and fenders.  The splitter is wrapped to simulate carbon fiber.  Yes there was some photoshopping involved and Justin did a fabulous job getting the artwork from his computer to the front of my car.  The photos don't do it justice.  After seeing this process in person, i will never paint another car.

How does it compare to the cost of painting, going through that whole process?  (That is what your are implying?) There are some amazing things you can do on a computer you would have difficulty recreating in a paint booth without a lot of time and layering of paint and that might be were it would really pay off.

This wrap including art was $2,600.  it is track quality not show quality.  Said differently it is driver quality not investment quality.  I would bet that any high end car with a matt finish scheme is a wrap.  The products these days are that good.

What do you mean by track quality? Can you polish and wax it after it is cleaned? So for $2600 your whole car was wrapped?

Yep,  whole car,  The link ds968 posted to vinyl wraps shows the car being disassembled and every painted surface that is exposed is wrapped.  This ain't that kind of job.  The edges around trim parts and seals are all hidden under the seals. Same for the sunroof.  The door jambs and frames are not done.  I took the hatch trim and spoiler off and had that done separately and reassembled it myself.  Areas like the door handle cut out are done with multiple pieces.  You can see a seam if you look for it.  Again, nothing was disassembled.  Also, the wrap will show all flaws in the existing painted surface.  Dings, dents, chips, etc show through.  There is a shop in San Carlos, CA that wrapped a Cayenne track car for $3,000.  That car was disassembled to some degree to get better appearance around lights, mirrors, badges and such.  It did not get the door jambs or door frame done.  It also didn't have any artwork.  But, the vinyl protects the underlying paint from track debris.

Interesting. My car while it looks great is getting chips all over. Of course it is a track car and that's part of the deal!

Just completed another 3 day event at Summit Point with the Potomoc region. Not quite as hot as three weeks ago but hot enough. God bless the inventor of the cool shirt. Great weekend for driving except my run group had too many cars in it. This was their summer Porschefest and it was packed. More cars than I've ever seen there. First day a guy rolled his car in the rain. Me, I came in after three laps as I could just not stand the voices in my head screaming at me that I was being stupid. Fortunately my meds hadn't kicked in and I could hear the voices loud and clear.

Summit Point is famous for it's deer strikes and it ran true to form. A guy hit a deer head on at speed and had it implode his window. The Porsche Gods were looking down and watching out. Amazingly enough he ended covered in shit, piss, blood and deer parts with a completely skinned torso resting comfortably in the passenger footwell. While his car was totaled, he wasn't hurt and had prepared venison ready to take home.

I had my first off road incident and thank god it was Saturday and not Friday or I would have been in the woods searching for Bambi!
