Headlights ON in "down" position?
#21

Damn. Does not light up in the locked position. Only the flashing mode.

Ok, confirmed they exist. Check out this site www.rosepassion.com it's a UK based parts supplier and if you drill down to 968 you will find UK versions of headlights whose part diagrams include 5watt city lights that appear to me mounted in the upper part of the housing. They also show a integrated fog light in the left rear tail light.

Nope only if you pull the stalk towars you. I assume that they rigged the stalk (tied to the steering wheel) for the picture.

The headlights on my euro version have the 5W bulb mounted in a seperate hole. Do US cars not have this hole in the headlights? Maybe it is just that simple and you can add the bulb. By the way these city lights/ parking lights are also used for another feature I assume is specific for euro cars. When the ignition is off (key removed) and you set the indicator stalk to either left or right only the parking light (the 5W bulb in the headlight and the normal light in the rear) on the corresponding side of the car will light up.

Jay, that's the first thing that came to mind doing when I went to check it out ( tie it to the steering wheel just for a photo op ) but waiting for a proper venue at dusk to do that :-)

I have a feeling that there will be a whole series of these shots. Mybe we should set up a gallery <img src="/forum/images/smilies/968/smile.png" class="smilie" alt="" />

Happy New Year,

@jaap...I doubt there is a hole, but will check. The site I provided sells two different headlamps depending on whether it is a euro version or not. I think the real question is does the wiring harness include the connection for the 5 watt bulb or would you have to wire into the park lamp circuit. Something for me to explore over the winter months.

I LIKE the direction this is taking!

Hopefully the wiring harness has tje "extra" wire AND the headllight has a "plug" where the 5W bulb would go. But it probably is not that simple...

Look forward to everyone's feedback...

So I took the car out at dusk yesterday, parked it in a suitable photo opp spot, turned the lights knob to the first position, made sure the flashing signal stalk is pulled in and tied to the steering wheel, got out with the camera ready to take that great shot with lights on in the down position and...no headlights ! Parking lights, fog lights, etc all on, but not the headlights. So I started the car and tried to see if that works, thinking perhaps those lights come on only with the engine running ..still nothing ! I could have sworn when I tested it in the garage the headlights reflection was on the wall, but perhaps it was only the fog lights .. Now I'm bummed. ;-(

I also did the test yesterday. When I pulled the signal stalk my first reaction was to think the headlights had indeed come on. But when I parked in front of a large window, I noticed that it was the fog lights shining brighter (as DaveN mentioned in his post).

I am happy to find out that I can "flash" someone (the fog lights) even if all switches are OFF.

I did not do an inspection of the headlamp assembly to see if it had "european upgrade" possibilities... A good project for Saturday.

I agree it's a pretty cool look:

Even better if the 5w bulb can be added to US headlights with no other mods.

Anything new on this? Particularly regarding the existence of the hole for the 5W bulb in the US housing? Thanks!

First please refer to RoW cars instead of European. The north American cars are the exception, it's not the other way around ;-)

Please note that the light units of RoW cars are totally different than those of American cars. The latter being of the sealed beam type.

Do American 968's have sealed beams? That's kinda odd given that type isn't mandatory in the US since 1984 (according to WikiPedia).

Why would Porsche bother to put those into the cars instead of Euro-style ones?
