FLU season and DUIs
#1

PSA on the local channel this morning advising anyone taking any kind of cold or flu medications ( whether prescription or regular OTC meds, etc..) that if you get pulled over and tested positive for anything that is believed to impare you, you can be charged with a DUI. While the courts may be a bit more lenient with you as opposed to the more common DUI, you're still going to have to deal with the costs of the appearance, the ticket, your DMV record which will reflect a DUI and which does not distinguish one type of DUI from another, the insurance implications, yada, yada. Scary ! ( particularly since I've been dealing with a mild cold for the last couple of days and drove to work this morning with some OTC medication in my system which although is the non-drowsy kind, still puts you in a "zone" , or " spacey " state..)

I'm pretty much afraid of all other drivers on the road...I figure all those dopes are out to kill me with their texting, eating, radio play, make-up shaving...yada, yada, yada. In my area in particular it's "entitled drivers" (You know, Tiffany is late for dance recital, and Biff has soccer...)

Drowsy driving is responsible for up to 1/3 of all traffic fatalities...

If I take a cold medication I try to limit my driving, or take meds when I get to work, rather than before leaving the house.

JMO,

In New York, I believe it's a DWAI, or Driving While Ability Impaired. There should also be a DWAM, or Driving While Applying Makeup.

Just got over a week of having the damn flu. My 968 is worse off tho - currently dead from a major electrical meltdown. Depending on the extent of the damage, I might be posting for an under-dash wiring harness soon...

Over here, they actually do a roadside drug test which is a saliva swab. It is testing for opiates, meth, amphetamines, etc. If positive, you are charged pending a lab screen test that will show if you are taking codral, etc (based on the trace make-up). We do the same thing in the Mining industry, but it is normally urine analysis - which is more accurate and the drugs are more visible for longer.

Would have thought that the requirement was to prove that you are impared and using something that was illegal - rather than charging you indiscriminately. What happenned to the Magna Carta - innocent until proven guilty?

I can understand doing the testing to create a deterent and to catch those putting others at risk - but common over the counter drugs - come on.

We also have a policy at work for "Working While Impaired" and it is possible to be terminated for unsafe practices while on cold medications or any other impairing substance.

No, nothing dangerous like that. We work with a lot of huge tanks full of explosives like isobutane.

If it doesn't say "Do not take this medication of you will be working with explosives" what could be the harm ???
