Floor Mats
#1

I've been searching around the Forums for info about floor mats and found a lot of good feedback on Lloyds mats.

The question I have not been able to answer is whether the Lloyds mats are better than the Porsche OE mats.

Pelican shows OE Porsche Tequipment Floormats in Classic Grey for $161 (4 piece set with Porsche embroidering).
The 4-piece Lloyds "Ultimat" mats with similar embroidering are $167 for a color that they say is "the closest" to classic grey.

I have a request in to Sunset and am hoping that their price for the Porsche mats is even better than Pelican (it usually is for unique P stuff). We'll see.

So why have people chosen to go with Lloyds? Are they better than the Porsche mats?
Is the color match to Classic Grey good?

Thanks in advance for any advice you can offer.

I was wondering the exact same thing! Porsche no longer makes Midnight blue mats, and as a result I have also been looking at the lloyds mats.

I picked up a brand new set of Lloyd mats with the Porsche stitched in on eBay a couple of weeks ago for under $100 shipped. Just keep your eyes out.

Interesting.

They definitely show up as two different things on the Pelican web site.
But a strange coincidence that they end up pricing out at almost the same cost.

The thing that bothered me most was the fact that the color for the Lloyds mats was only described as "the closest" color, rather than "the" color.

Anybody have Classic Grey Lloyds mats?
Is the color a good match?

I don't know what the brand of mats is that were in my car when I got it, but they are not a perfect match to the rest of the carpet. It has always bugged me and I don't want to repeat the issue.

Mark,
Thanks for the Ebay tip. That's definitely a wild card to consider...
Were yours classic grey?

Johann - my car is Marine Blue interior and the Lloyd's Mats were an super match...not sure about Midnight Blue on the 94 & 95 cars nor how close that blue carpet may be in color to the 92 & 93 Marine Blue. Go to the Lloyd's site as they have many more choices than Pelican lists on their site. Lloyd's site also allows you to choose "other colors" in addition to what they refer to as "standard Porsche" colors. I think I'm going with "space gray" for the Coupe since it seems to be a better match.

Flash,

According to Pellican's site, the 4XR is classic grey and 5FV is black.
Your part numbers are for 2 sets, right?

"great match"
That's what I needed to hear someone say. Thanks.
Still waiting for a response to my web inquiry from Sunset. Hoping for a good price...

Do any of these mats utilize the seat track extension holding brackets where the mat would have two holes at the rear of the mat and the holder would come up through them and there is a plastic piece at the top that turns to keep them in place? Thanks

lol - i guess i ordered the new black ones for the blue car at the same time - thanks

yes - great match

all of the mats i have ever seen for this car have the metal clamping holders that either clip into the seat rails or the similar ones that pin through the carpet

this includes the ones that came with my car when it was new

flash nailed it...the Lloyds mats have the a plastic clip on strap the is detachable and the mating connector has a metal spring clip that you attach to the seat rails. Very effective at keeping the in the correct position.

Well then, here is another style for you. Although not as popular as the standard mats that your car came with I have seen a few 968s with these "velour" mats and come with the "active fastening system" , my car included, I just want to get a new set. Here is a photo link from a period Porsche book.

Jamie-

This thread shows what I did...

http://www.968forums.com/index.php?showtopic=6635

I do not like carpeted mats as they wear too quickly and are a b!tch to keep clean. So far, the rubber mats I cut have held up well - and I just had to drive the cab for three days in a row and through some rain while my daily driver gets some work done. Glad I went this way. No carpeted mats again for me.

Just another option to consider....

Yes Jamie mine were Classic Grey and they were a perfect match. My Porsche brand ones used the little clips that have 3 or 4 pins that going into the carpet the opposite direction of the normal slide. The Lloyds mats have an anchor post that goes into the carpet and then holes in the actual mats that slide over them. Lloyd mats are not "installed" yet jsut checked fit and color before returning them to the box until I put the interior of the car back together.

now i have to go and look at the brand (if it says anything but porsche) - all 3 sets i have had have the same "jaw-clamping" type hooks - all 3 sets came directly from porsche, the first ones came with the car when it was first purchased (the only reason i know that is because the PO made a big deal about the fact that they didn't make those particular ones anymore)

so lloyd's is not the OEM mat?

I do not think Lloyds were the OEM, but I've been know to be wrong before. The Lloyds mats I purchased are quite a bit nicer than the stock mats IMHO. I go with the "ultimats" line from Lloyds.

no worries - i have no clue - i was under the impression that lloyd's was the vendor - now i guess i get to try to figure that out

i know that i got both the black ones and the grey ones from sunset, and carried the porsche part number on the packaging

i know they both came with the same jaw-type clips that my original ones came with, but with a "hook pin" instead of a two prong clip

i know that the backing is now foam and no longer the woven rubberized material of my original ones

i thought the new ones said lloyds on the packaging, but there is no tag on them, so i'm no longer sure

OK, so here is my summary of what we know:

If you want rubber mats, Jim determined that Weathertech mats are not customized for our cars. He made some mats by cutting them out of some black mat material that he found. They look great and don't have any issues with odor or outgassing from the rubber.
Jim, we need the source info for this material and to determine if it comes in colors other than black.

According to Mark and Flash, Lloyds and Porsche OE mats are both an "exact match" to Classic grey interiors (great news for me!).
Porsche doesn't supply mats in Midnight Blue or Marine Blue any more. Lloyds has a good match for Marine Blue, according to Darryl. We don't know about the Lloyds match for Midnight Blue. We'll need to get a report back from Johann when he gets his.

According to Darryl, the Lloyds mats have a plastic clip on a strap from the mat that connects to a mating clip on a strap that clips into the seat rails with a metal spring connector.
This sounds like the mats I currently have in my car. I don't like this system because my mats tend to shift laterally and I have to keep realigning them every week or so. This may just be due to the age of my mats and the fact that the ruberized backing is old and dry.

The mats that Jeff shows in his post seem like the best design. They would stay in place longitudinally, laterally, and directionally.
Unfortunately, nobody seems to know where to get them. Bummer.

I can't quite picture the Porsche OE mat securing configuration as described.
Mark described 3 or 4 pins going into the carpet and Flash describes jaw clamping hooks.
We need pictures... or at least more description.

We're not sure if the Porsche OE mat is made by Lloyds or not.
According to Darryl, the Lloyds mats (Ultimats) are much nicer than the stock Porsche ones.

By the way, the price quote I got from Sunset for the Porsche mats made me very happy. Much better than Pelican.
Since they don't post that info on their web site, I won't quote it here, but you will definitely want to give them a call if you are going with the Porsche mats.
Much cheaper than Lloyds with similar embroidery, unless you get a great E-bay deal like Mark.

Updates and corrections?

i'm not thrilled with the pin-hook type retainer clip - in the grey car i am constantly fighting them staying in place, and whenever the seat moves, it snags them - the problem is that because they only grab the edge of the beading, and the pin-hook only goes in from the rear, any time the seat goes backward, they slide out of the carpet

the 2 prong clips of my original ones, which i still use on the black mats in the blue car, hold still much better

i'll take pics the next time i'm in the white car

i like the "through-hole" idea, and that works well in the mats in the M3 (though it is a flat plastic twist button that holds them down)

the only concern i would have about the ones in jeff's post would be in the event of the seat being lowered and then running over them when pushed forward - i don't know if they get in the way or not - jeff?

I must be the exception to the rule...my mats don't move at all and fit perfectly. The plastic mating connectors and strap thingy jiggy can be adjusted much like suspenders. On the extreme rare occasion when I move the seat forward, it bunches up, but then again, I rarely move my seat. If I remember to disconnect the clips, then no problem.

Flash, the through hole method seems to be very popular these days as I run into it frequently on cars I work on. Seems to be a pretty solid method and they don't move around, but if the little clips get rotated, the mats tend to lift off the pegs on their own. It does mean you have holes in your mats though.

Jamie, you do realize that after this exercise, you will be the mat guru?
