Firehawk on Track
#21

Sadly, I'll never have those driving skills. Also, considering how much of a factor weight plays it certainly explains anyone's obsession with getting rid of every feasible ounce in our cars.. too bad there are so many compromises in comfort, appearance, etc when you do that. absolutely - on a tight technical track, a lighter car will outpace a heavier car with far more power - it was always fun to watch the super 7 pound the big block cobra at sears - even my mgb was faster through the corners than my 968 is

but, give it some room to run...........that's why many teams change gearing, depending on the track

the same would be with a 280hp 968 vs a 420hp 911 turbo - the hp/wt ratio is a factor, sure, but the sheer mass and nature of rear engine will hold the 911 back on a tight track

i'm not taking anything away from the driving, but i'm frankly not at all surprised at the result - fairly evenly matched power to weight, a much lighter car, and a driver who knows the car and isn't afraid to use it - pretty basic

and a whole lot of fun

Ben:

Maybe one of these days I'll come out and get spanked by some of you Pro IT guys... I may try to convince Pete to go 50/50 on a Traqmate or equivalent to share between the Hawk and the new Red car. It felt like mid 30s but there was plenty left. Well setup, the Hawk could possibly be flat from T1 all the way to T4. I was also leaving lots on the table at 4, and kinda coasting breathing off the throttle early into the pre-octopus barke zone-right hander as I was running out of RPMs and did not want to bounce off the limiter (Pete was watching from the bridge! ) All that's worth probably 1-3 seconds. I don't think I have personally logged a lap that fast in there but a 31-32 I believe is very doable.

Your ride is looking great at the shop... spiffy new hubs are mac daddy......... That thing better not be leaking... LOL

Yo Crespo - thanks for the pic of my ride! Missing that thing in the garage. Going for the full safety factor with hubs, hardened studs and 19MM pins on the ball joints.

She better not leak!!! :-)

I think you'd be right in the front pack mix at a Pro IT race. The driving is excellent - they give little quarter but stay off your fenders for the most part. The trick is to qualify well and stay out of the carnage. A Traqmate will be on my list for next year.

PS - I think I saw your car for sale on Racing Junk or Lindsey Racing - came with the driver front cut off needing a fender? That car had a bunch of goodies already installed if I remember right.

Cheers

LOL... Most likely not #68. Only the shell left the shop, en route to a scrap metal processor. It had absolutely nothing attached.... well.... maybe pieces of the harness and a few tears...

Man - that'll be some work - definitely a different car than I was remembering. How soon to track ready?

Hoping mid-March. Pete is trying to get the car in for the cage upgrade with your guy... Marty perhaps is his name? Anyway, I have another option that is likely cheaper but I think your guy does somewhat better "weld bead" work. Hopefully he is reasonably priced. My guy IS certainly cheap and could take the car...

After that, it is a matter of basically fixing a small area in the rear quarter panel and throwing some paint on the inside, fender, bumper, and quarter panel. Thereafter, interior re-assembly with some new and upgraded parts to be ready and looking good. But all in all, it could actually be on track next weekend if we wanted to, I just want it to be closer to "obsessive compulsive picky pablo" grade. (direct quote from Pete! ) Mechanically, the major things remaining are the race hubs & studs... I will not go on-track without those...

Have you scheduled your first event?

Can't wait to see your car all turned out and done. I've got my schedule lined up for this year. I'll run six Pro IT weekends which will be eight or nine races for the series - hopefully I am in contention for the Pro IT ITR championship. On three of those race weekends there will also be SCCA national races held. I'll run those and then a seventh weekend for my fourth national race to qualify for the SCCA Runoffs national championship at Road America WI. Eighth weekend will be in Wisconsin.

I'll also instruct a couple weekends - will go to NJMP in March to help do the driver school and get free track time to warm up for the first race on April 10th at New Hampshire Motor Speedway. (This track is sorta the last one on my list but you must get the points...)

With the work Pete is doing on the car, it should be faster than last year and hopefully the other guys left their cars alone :-)

Let me know if there is a NASA event at NJMP that you will race at - I'd come down. Not sure if I"m GTS 4 or 3

Post up some pics of your new car!!!
