Hi Gang -



I'm getting an intermittent exhaust smell in the cabin of my coupe, always on the freeway, sometimes with a window down, sometimes not.



I'm going to take Pete's advice and do the vaseline on the hatch seal trick, and I'm also getting the exhaust replaced from the cat-back (another RS Barn purchase!).



Curious what else it might be if those two things don't do the trick. I was reading a thread about this on Friday, but now I can't find it.

Greetings: Sounds like you have a bit more diagnosis to do. Is the smell of unburned hydrocarbons (indicating a pre-cat leak) or sulphurous (indicating a post-cat leak)? Worse in the rain or dry? Any pattern at all? Is it a stock exhaust system or modified? Assuming it's a post-cat smell and assuming that the integrity of the exhaust system is not in question, then you should move toward looking at the body. Are you sure that there are no holes at the back of the body (access plugs to tail lamp assemblies, spare tire well, etc.)? Have you tried driving with the hatch ajar to see if the problem becomes more prevalent? Have you tried putting an extension on the tailpiece for diagnosis purposes? Have you had someone ride in the back of the car to see if they can identify any sources? Does it leak water anywhere? Try parking in a dark location, then shining a bright light either inside to out or outside to in. If it's a pre-cat smell but there's no sound or signs of exhaust leaks, then look for PCV system leaks. I'd do some homework before throwing money at it. Hope this is helpful. Jim in Atlanta
