Decision: Street tires, R-1's?
#1

OK, I've now done a few aotocrosses and I see I need some more grip if I'm going to run with the big boys. I work for a large tire distributor and can buy Michelin, BFG, Nitto, Yokohama, race tires or the street versions. Sumitomo builds a great tire in the HTRZIII and they are really priced right. I've picked up a set of 17" 996 wheels that will fit the 968. My problem is that when Flash builds me my roll bar (chassis brace) I want to do DE events here at Sebring along with Autocross once a month. I have to drive to the events, so I'm thinking that since I will never be racing for the national championship, a great set of street tires would last me about as long as I want to do this.

I'm the tire guy and should be giving out this advice , but I've never owned streetable race tires and wonder if all the driving to the events would be just a waste of rubber, or are they really that much better than these companies best street tires. Cost is about the same either way.

I just switched from Yoko's to Toyo T1R's very happy with the ride, grip/handling...I have heard they are not so great in the wet.

Also recently switched to Toyo T1R's on 17" 993 wheels after having Dunlop sports on 16" cups and then Continental's on the 17's. After a little bedding in and getting the pressures right (installers got it wrong!) i would say they have a softer wall than the conti's and feedback ain't as good but grip is fantastic and tire noise is very good for the width. Hoping to tighten up the steering feel when I replace the front shocks.
